by Marg Rowell The residents of Waterloo had a number of picnic spots before the purchase of the present park. o â€" c T_Ohe of the earliest was in a wooded area of a height of land near the present corner of Wilâ€" low and Erb Streets. A pine grove fronting on Park Street where the Mutual Life is. was a popular picnic place. Quickfall‘s Bush on the hill (near Lincoln Avenue) was another picnic area. The old showgrounii at the corner of William and Caroline was used for fall fairs, horse races, baseball, lacrosse, football and field days. In 1890 the Board of Trade realized that a more suitable park and athletic field should be bought for the citizens. A committee was formed and three sites were considered. They looked into using Mount Hope Cemetery as a joint park with Berlin, the old showgrounds were another site. However, R.Y. Fish, chairman of the park committee of the town council, presented a reâ€" port recommending the purchase of the beautiâ€" fully wooded 65 acre Jacob Eby Farm. Grandstand in park built in 1890‘s _ The old showground was then surveyed into streets and lots and all the lots sold except a site for Alexander School. The grandstand in the picture was where the plaving field is now below the wooded hill where the Potter‘s Workshop is situated. A company was formed to build the grandstand in the early 1890‘s and it was handed over to the park about 1918. The Waterloo Bicycle Club built the track around the athletic ground and held many sucâ€" cessful races there including the Annual Meet of the Canadian Wheelman‘s Association in 1895 when an estimated 10,000 people witnessed the championship races. Pavilions and boathouses were erected, and about 1918, a women‘s cottage and rest room, a men‘s lavatory, and a septic tank sewerage disposal system were added. A greenhouse was also constructed and all the plants and flowers used in the park, and other public places as well as the cemetery were grown here. Historic Waterioo _ The entrance to the Park was through Queen ASSIFIED AD Victoria Memorial Gateway, which is the present Young Street entrance. It was c_onstruct- ed of brick and Indiana limestone, with beauâ€" tifully designed wrought iron work forming the sides and overhead arch. The gateway was ornamented by a number of electric lights. The cost of it was $1,200 all of which was contributed by popular subscription. In the early 1920‘s Edward F. Seagram presented a handsome bandstand to the Park, where the change houses for the pool are now. The photo was loaned to us by the City of Waterloo and the information came from the 1928 Annual Volume of the Waterloo Historical Society. _ FIESTA GAS BARBECUE This manâ€"sized gas barbecue is designed especially for those who enjoy an uncramped cooking area.
