PAINTS The role of the education trustee has changed consiâ€" derably since the Common School Act of 1816. This alâ€" lowed that when any town or village built d school and filled it with twenty stuâ€" dents, three trustees could be elected to run the school. In those days trustees did many of the administrative chores themselves and often met informally at the marâ€" ket place to discuss the operâ€" ation of the school. Being a. trustee on The Waterloo County Board of Education _ today â€" means being a member of a group whose formal ‘management and policy decisions have a direct effect on the educaâ€" tion of at least 49,000 young people. THE ROLE OF THE TRUSTEE Trustees today must be prepared to take the time and effort to review all asâ€" pects of the educational system on behalf of stu dents, parents, teachers, and taxpayers, a system that is still in its formative years and still subject to growing pains. * Trustees who work on the County Board represent the interests of the County. Inâ€" dividually a trustee has no authority. In fact, he or she is not classified by law as an Official School Visitor. Only when working as a group do trustees have the power to make decisions, and trustees must subordinate personal interests when supporting a majority decision of the To work in this way takes dedication and trustees will spend many hours at meetâ€" ings to discuss educational matters. It has been estiâ€" mated that a conscientious trustee may attend up to 160 meetings during a twoâ€"year term, meetings that may go on for 2 â€" 4 hours. Because education has exâ€" panded so rapidly a trustee should have a working knowledge of educational legislation and the policies and procedures of the Board. A great deal of ‘"homework" is also required before Board meetings so , that trustees are fully conversant with the topics under discussion. Trustees are also issued many invitations to a wide variety of school functions. authentic recipes Excellent CANADIAN cussine Large selection of Coo Coo clocks 9 mules south of CambndgeJunction Hwy 5 & 24 Ask for Max 1â€"448:â€" 15323 Austrian Villa‘?e lnn VIE N NA RE $ TA R A NA T A Taste of Old Europe â€" GERMAN & AUSTRIAN Beyond the classroom â€" ~= > Facts from the Waterloo County Board of Education. staff conferences, and local speaking engagements. Takâ€" ing these opportunities to meet the general public and to become better acquainted with school staff is a major part of a trustee‘s work. As well as attending reguâ€" lar Bofloand Committee of the le meetings usâ€" ually held once a week, a trustee will probably be askâ€" ed to serve on at least one of the Board‘s ad hoc comâ€" mittees. These â€" commitâ€" tees work on topics that ° range from school buses to special education and from~ equipping schools to negoâ€" tiating â€" salaries. ~Trustees working on a* committee should have a comprehenâ€" sive knowledge of its subject area. + . AD HOC COMMITTEES Trustees â€" forming â€" the Board of Education thus take on great responsibiliâ€" ties. The Board works with staff in establishing goals and objectives for the school system, and selects and adopts policies to attain these objectives. It makes a wide variety of decisions, reviews and evaluates the work of the staff, performs specific actions required by law, and delegates adminâ€" istrative ___ reSponsibility. Thus, trustees act as "manâ€" agers" rather than ‘"*adminâ€" istrators"‘. ROLE OF THE BOARD Each year, trustees select their own Chairman and Viceâ€"Chairman of the Board who conduct the meetings, act in an ex‘officio capacity on all ad hoc committees, and work in very close liaiâ€" son with the Director of Education and the Business Administrator. OTHER INFORMATION Honoraria: Under Section 40 of the Schools Administraâ€" tion Act, all trustees are enâ€" titled to receive a monthly honorarium based on school enrollment, and are also, under certain circumstanâ€" ces. entitled to mileage allowances. Qualifications: Any perâ€" son who is a Canadian citiâ€" zen, is 18 years of age or oldâ€" er,. and who is a resident of the school district of Waâ€" terloo County. is eligible to act as a trustee. Similarly, the Schools Administration ‘yan Act, Section 57. states that "if a trustee is convicted of an indictable offence, or becomes mentally ill, or ab sents himself without being authorized by resolution enâ€" tered in the minutes from Them Kitchenerites are clean folk, but some of them ain‘t so hot at grammar â€" as this street litter container shows.
