St. Kitt's Lions lead seri hy two games over Stars St. Catherines have skated away with the first two wins in a best-of-five OMHA semi-final series against the Waterloo Compton Stars. St. Kitts won the first game 8-7 and then came back with a 6-2 win inthesecondgame. _ Friday--- night St. Catharines arrived late at the Waterloo Arena but started thiL scoring early taking a " lead after only nine minutes of play. Mike Morphy scored Waterloo's first goal on a powerplay from Brian Price and Ke- vin Hergott. Three minutes later the St. Kitt's captain Mark Lukasik scored his second goal of the game to give the Lions a 4-1 lead in the second period. Dave Barrett, suffering from shell-shock. was pull- ed from the net and replac- ed by Doug Black at the start of the second period in the Star's net. Randy Harris scored for Waterloo to close the gap 4-2 from Paul Petrie and Paul Mowbray. John Gibson scored for St. Kitts five minutes later and two more powerplay by Peggy Kempel The Waterloo Major Atom Tim Horton Cubs and Wetland are now tied at five points each as they head into a sixth game in OMHA semi-finals. The Cubs won one game last week against Welland 2-0 with Welland coming back on Saturday with a 1-0 win. On Thursday the Cubs played host to Welland in the fourth game of the semi- finals. The Stars started off the third period by scoring with- in 38 seconds with a goal from Dave Blackburn as- sitgd by Dana Saunders._ Kevin Hergott finished the second period scoring for Waterloo from Dana Saunders as the Stars started to jell .as a hockey team. Three minutes later Waterloo scored two goals only 14 seconds apart to cut the Lions lead down to one goal. Paul Petrie scor- ed from Randy Harris and Lowell. Loveday let a shot go' between the goaitender's legs for Water- loo‘s third goal of the per- iod from Kevin Price and Mike Murphy. Four minutes later Mark Lukasik picked up the loose puck in front‘of the net to score what proved to be the winning goal for St. Kitts as Dana Saunders scored for Waterloo with five minutes .remaining in the game from Hergott and Price. The fifth game was host- ed by the Cubs on Satur- day. In this game both teams were held scoreless for two periods. Waterloo pulled goalie Black in favor of a sixth attacker but could not score the equalizer and St. Then with 3:19 left in the game Keith Callaghan scored from Ron Veltri to give Welland the 1-0 shut- and one tie for five points and Welland one win, two losses and one tie for three points in the best of five series or six points. Dave Barrett started in goal for the Stars and play- ed a brilliant first period despite the one goal as St. Kitts outshot Waterloo 15- St. Catharines, playing a very aggressive game, scored three second period goals as" Dean Baerg, Gary Halliwell and Mark Luka- sik scored one each to give the Lions a 4-0 lead. Kevin Hergott scored from Brian Price and Paul Mow- bray to cut St. Kitt's lead down to two goals with six minutes remaining. Graham Dennis started the third period fast for Waterloo as he broke Paul Bevan's bid for a shutout. Assists went to Dave Blackburn and Stu MacSor- ley. _ But Lukasik scored for his hat-trick on a break- away with only 46 seconds later to all but seal the game for the Lions. Just to put the finishing touches on the game John Gibson scored for St. Kitts once again on a break- away to end the game 6- Dave -Barrett faced 40 shots on goal and must want to sue his tearn-mates for non-support as they only had 21 shots on goal and gave the ' puck away 17 times as they were unable to cope with the forecheck- ing St. Kitts threw at them. Waterloo took 67 minutes in penalties while St. Cath- erinesr had 58 minutes in the box.
