A refri- gerator or freezer will oper- ate more economically when filled to capacity but not crammed with food. Electrical bills can be low The insidious thing is that you can see wasted food but you can't see wasted en- ergy. Kilowatt hours are frittered away quietly and invisibly leaving behind only a few dollar figures on your electric bill that could be lower. Take the refrigerator and freezer. for example. Both operate 12 to 14 hours a day. constantly drawing ttiectri- cal energy. Given proper care and use. however, they can be major energy savers. It's a good idea to make ure the appliance is not set to run colder than neces- sary. The manufacturer's manual will recommend the proper setting. When buying a used re- frigerator for checking the efficiency of the one you have nowl, test the rubber seal round the fridge and freezer door by closing the door on a sheet of paper. There should be a consider- able drag when you yank the paper out. If not. the seal is worn or badly fitting and should be replaced. Check When having the refriger- ator installed. keep in mind that it will use less energy if located away from heating equipment and direct sun- light. Also. allow enough space for air to circulate around the unit. 1975 GMC "RALLY" . . . the go-everywhere, versatile 12-passenger wagon . . . great tor sight-seeing traps. team or group transportatnon. Recipes have been collect- ed from members for the Old Fashioned Cook Book that is now being compiled. Convenor Mrs. Marion White is seeking tried and A badly sealed refriger- ator can allow air leaks that make the appliance work harder to keep a uniformly cold temperature. And that means higher operating costs in terms of kilowatt consumption. When the frost. in your freezer is about one-quarter- inch thick. it); time to de- frost. Frost wastes watts of cooling power by acting as an insulator. with the manufacturer for a Let hot foods cool down before storing in the fridge. Placing the hot pan or pot in cold water will reduce the temperatur quickly. By the way, frost-free refrigerators are great savers of your energy, but not of electricity. A stand- ard l4-cubic-foot refrigera- tor-freezer uses about 950 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity a year. A blocked condensate drain, for example. will cause build-up of ice on the coils and cut down on the cooling power. You might check the manufacturer's manual to find out exactly where the drain is located tit varies with various models), and make sure the drain is unclogged, A frost-free model of the same size uses about 1,500 kWh. That"s about 50 per cent more energy per year for this feature.
