The Senate of the Univer- sity ot Waterloo has elected Carl A. Pollock of Kitchener. Chancellor of the University. He succeeds Dr. Ira G. Needles, who has served as Chancellor since 1966. Mr. Pollock. a nationally known figure in the business world. has been involved with UW since its inception. He was a member of a com- mittee of townspeople who, almost 20 years ago, carried out the organization of the university. He has served continuously on the Board of Governors since the uni- versity's establishment' and has been Chairman of the Board since 1966. A Kitchener native. he took degrees at both the University of Toronto and Oxford and at one time ser- iously contemplated a ca- reer as an academic. Instead, he made his career with Electrohome Limited. a company founded by his father in 1907. As President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Electrohome for many years, Mr. Pollock promoted the development of the company in keeping with his strongly held belief that Canadian industry to be successful. must be self- sufficient and creatively innovative. His outside activities in- cluded being President of, the Canadian Manufactur- er's Association. of the Electronic Industries As- sociation. and of the On- tario Chamber of Commerce. He also saw service with the Canadian Chamber of Com- meree, the Ontario Research Foundation and the National Design Council. Locally. he was active in a number of civic organiza- tions and was President of the Kitchener Chamber or Commerce and the, Kitchen- er-Waterloo Symphony 0r- chestra Association. Other business interests included being a co-founder and President of Central Ontario Television Limited (now a subsidiary of Elec- trohome) and of Raytheon Canada Limited, as well as directorships in The Royal Bank of Canada. The Do- minion Life Assurance Com- pany. Waterloo Trust (now Waterloo residents need not be alarmed if they see a pink envelope in their mail.
