Cooking contest held at Laurel High school news By Patti Howald * This year the Qktoberfest cooking contest was held October 8th and 9th at Laurâ€" el Vocational School under the direction of Wolfgang Stutz and Murray Milne. The contest was open to all senior elementary and high school students. After a good response from the contestants at last years initial contest, this year proved to be a smashâ€" ing success. Miss North America Okâ€" toberfest 1973 and Miss Kâ€" W 1974 were at L V.S. to congratulate the winners of the contest. In total more than 200 students and teachâ€" ers took part in this most successful venture. We had a delicious Thanksâ€" giving dinner on Wednesâ€" day. Included were turkey, dressing and gravy, mashed potatoes, parsnips, â€" and turnip. For dessert we had pumpkin pie with whipped cream. It was also nicely served by food service. .a'l'he girls baseball team yed against Brantford and London last Wednesday, we lost both games but only by one point, the girls tried really hard and it was a close game all the way‘ Our boys soccer team also played in Brantford last Wednesday. They tied with London 1â€"1, and Brantford beat them 1â€"0. The boys volleyball team won both games against both Brantâ€" ford and London. * We have work experience week every year at Laurel, On Thursday, October 17th one of our representatives Mr. D. B. Most of them seem to enjoy it and this gives them ideas about what kind of work they would like to do. Each Thursday a meeting is held in Phillip Hall for all the students that are going out the following weeks. They are given information and instructions on where they are supposed to go. The Grand River Cross Country â€" meet _ attracted schools from Guelph, Stratâ€" ford, Brantford, Paris and the Kâ€"W area. In the Midget division alone there were 122 runners. John Mota, again did very well placing sixth in the midget race. He ran the 2.4 mile course in 12:53 only 20 seconds off the. winning time. The cross country team has at least two more races this season with the Twin City championships being held on the 18th of October. If the runners do well enough, they will go to the CWOSSA championships on Other runners for Laurel were Kevin Dahms, Bob Crowe, Stewart Linton and Dale Mawdsleg. Julie Bender of Niagara Street in Kitchener preâ€" sented a display of antique bottles collected from all October 25. An open 1 mile cross country race will} be held on October 22. Bluevale‘s third annual Oktoberfest Week, got into full swing on Tuesday with lunch hour events scheduled. It inclydes everything from a root beer drinking conâ€" test to a "Ms, Oktoberfest" Pageant with 12 of our own male beauties baring their charm in quest of the title.
