She was found only one mile from the search party‘s headquarters and told rescuers that she had kept herselfâ€"alive with survival techniques learned years ago in a hiking club. How do people get lost? It would seem so simple really â€" you know your destination, you know the direction you‘re going to take. Yet, it seems, we have the unerring talent for walking in circles. Tests have shown that blindfolded subjects can‘t walk in a straight line to a preâ€" identified target on level ground. The logical explanation is that the human body is lopsided; one leg is slightly longer than the other; or the stronger leg is used for ‘pushâ€"off‘ when walking. Hence the veering syndrome. But logical explanations don‘t always hold up in the real world. An experienced boat handler was fishing in a dense fog at dawn. The fish were down and he decided to head for a more promisâ€" ing spot on the opposite shore. He knew exactly where his objective was in relation to his presâ€" ent shore location. He steered with a steady hand but ran too long without touching shore, so he throttled down. There was no wind; he hadn‘t drifted. He stayed on course, afraid to change direction in the fog blind. After several minutes, he could see the dark outline of shore. He had mistakenly steered a large semicircle and hit the same shore he started out on, but several hundred yards to the north. So much for the long leg theory. This committee consists of five Francophones elected in public meetings and three Trustees (including myself) chosen by their peers. $ Almost a year ago parents from the French community in Galt petitioned the Board of Education to provide a highâ€" school program in French. Francophone children in the Waterloo Region receive a Frenchâ€"language education from kindergarden through Grade 10 at a separate school in Galt. To go beyond that level, however, they have had to switch to an Englishâ€"language public school. The switch is not easy, and many Francophone students have preferred to drop out altogether. This situation is what inspired Francoâ€" phone parents to petition the board. Among other things, school boards are required to proâ€" vide education in French whenever a sizeable group of Francophone parents requests it. Residents of Waterloo may not know that the legislation has had some local reverâ€" berations. This year the Waterloo Board is transporting about 24 pupils to Hamilton; a dozen fewer than originally anticiâ€" pated. Within three years the figure is expected to reach 65 or 70 students. Most Francophone parents favoured the Hamilton opâ€" tion, despite the fact that it means an hour‘s bussing each way. A consolidated high school can offer a richer variety of courses than a program for a few students in the Waterâ€" loo Region. The greater size of the Hamilton school, moreover, will create a more genuine French environment. And the Hamilton school, while it will share a building with an Englishâ€"language school at the start, will have a Francophone principal rather than a coordinator working under the authority of an Englishâ€"language principal. After investigation and discussion, the FLAC recomâ€" mended, and the board approved, the Hamilton option. There were only two options. One was to recommend the establishment of a Frenchâ€"language program in one of the secondary schools in the region. The other was to purchase Frenchâ€"language instruction from the Hamilton. City Board, which has just created a Frenchâ€"language seconâ€" dary school which is attracting students from several neighbouring counties.
