10 â€" Watertoo Chronicle, Wednesday, May 8. 1974 Dear Sir: _ The land speculation tax recently tabled at Queen‘s Park is cruel legislation which heavily penalizes thousands of rural land ownâ€" ing Ontario residents whom I suspect have no idea that they are being acted against. When the Jlaw is passed, these people will find they are subject to a tax of 50% on their lands when sold. The tax will be in addition to any capital gains tax they have to pay the Federal Government. All of this amounts to expropriation of lands with little compenâ€" sation. The following is a parâ€" tial list of properties which are taxable: _ 1) All lands owned by rural residents, unless the property is smaller than ten acres and is lived on. If it is lived on and greater than ten acres then it beâ€" comes taxable. 2) With few exceptions all rural income _ producing properties which are not a place of residence. The tax is unfair to farmâ€" ers, lumbermen and other rural people who . have workâ€" ed all their lives on their lands and have their life savings tied up in this asâ€" set. You really have to stretch the â€" imagination far to classify them as land speculators, as the title of the bill suggests. _ The government has statâ€" Lettersâ€"â€" to the Edifor ze ed that they intend on drivâ€" ing the price of real estate down by passing the land speculation tax and another tax of 20% if a rural resiâ€" dent sells any of his proâ€" perty to a foreigner. This, of course, will enable the government to buy rural lands at cheap prices. They have also conveniently wordâ€" ed the legislation to read that "f land is sold to the Crown instead of private persons, the tax will not be payable. The government will now be in a position to force the farmer or lumberâ€" man to sell his land to them. Land â€" speculation _ and skyrocketing house prices is strictly a city problem. This being the case, why should the farmer and the rural resident have to suffer because of the situation in the big cities and surroundâ€" ing areas? It is unfair to harâ€" ness country people with this legislation. These laws should only «cover certain cities and towns and not the whole province. ~~ Yours truly. o Dear Editor, Since you get several thank you letters let me exâ€" press my gratitude to you and to The Book Barn for advertising (a whole page full) a book ""The Joy of Sex" (April 3). Dear Editor, Your â€" Feedback‘s ~comâ€" ments about Chief Henrich‘s raise were rather sceptical (doubtful?) _ Most of Waâ€" terloo citizens do not know much of Chief of Police duâ€" ties or his educational background. An engineer, who has to have grade thirâ€" teen education and then study five to six years at University gets average $10,000 _ (Chronicle, April 10). Chief Henrich has not made any headlines with his efficiency, on the conâ€" trary. When a young man went around in Waterloo strangling teenagers unâ€" conscious, he assured us that this person was caught and in a mental institution. This was not true. Later the strangler, who lived in Waterloo, was found, but not by Waterloo police. Mr. Henrich is not capable to control his staff either. Sgt. Gordon Kuntz was in court (Record, April 24) for punching a youngster‘s Liberated Lizette OPEN THURSDAY AND FRIDAY TL 9 PATRICK PRO KED DUNHAM EATON NB A To the Editor : Speaking before the Unitâ€" ed Nations Assembly, Oct. 4 1965 Pope Paul made the following statement: Let the world know this the Church looks at the world with proâ€" found understanding, with sincere admiration and with a sincere intention not of conquering it but of servâ€" ing it not of despising it but of appreciating it, not of conâ€" demning it but of strengthenâ€" ing and saving it. You must admit. that Pope Paul‘s statement gave the United Nations high praise. Howâ€" ever, looking through my Catholic bible I note in James 4: Verse 4 the followâ€" ing quote: ‘"Do you not face at a school dance (allegedly broken jaw). Beside the police brutality m Waterloo the police offiâ€" when there is a simple two car crash (without casualâ€" ties). I don‘t understand why it takes them hours to write a report of an acciâ€" dent. A newcomer from Toronto told me proudly how efficient is the police force there and how small the crime rate. Why don‘t you, Chief Henrich, do something to improve the Waterloo Police reputaâ€" tion? Show, us that you deâ€" serve your high salary. I am _ surprised the Chamber of _Commerce dares say: ‘"We approachâ€" ed this thing from an unâ€" biased stand point‘"‘. They are as biased as they come. Don‘t tell me there are more retail merchants than buying public in this city. And I as a non merchant, but still a voting member of this community am 100% in favour of a ward system. The Waterloo Chronicle, Waterioo, Ont. _ * As well, your conversion of the word amoral, which means neither moral nor immoral, â€" into amorality, which does not exist, fits the generally ~confused quality of the piece. The word you were looking for is imâ€" morality. _ ~ s Dear Sir: Your description of Waâ€" terloo Regional Police as Keystone Kops (Pinball Anticsâ€"May 1) was itself a caricature of journalistic writing._It was neither honâ€" est nor objective. And the use of such pejoratives as dick, heavies, heroic ~ and fearless makes a travesty of responsible journalism. > Your fatuous suggestion that the police ‘"would be better attending to the criâ€" minal aspects of the region~ is really much too old for you to claim credit for. It has been bleated by almost every "law abiding"~ citizen ever caught in such inno cent pursuits as drunk drivâ€" ing and wife beating. The point at issue was not why this absurd law exists. It was that despite preâ€" cise warnings by the police, the backers of the pinball tournament made clear in advance their intention to flout the law. When they broke it, they threw down (continued on page 11) May 3, 1974.
