David was born in 1850, the sixth son of John and Annie Bean. The 1961 edition of the Chronicle writes this about him: About the same time David Bean bought the house built in 1864 at 71â€"73 George Street the residents of Waterloo elected him as their mayor. Mr. Bean held the position from 1901 until 1903 and at the same time kept his eye on his two newspapers, the Waterloo Chronicle and the Berlean Telegraph. ‘"‘"After passing his earlier years engaged in agriâ€" cultural persuits on his fathers farm, David obtained an education and chose the teaching profession as his pursiut in life. He successfully passed his examâ€" ination in 1867 and January of 1868 began teaching in a public school. "By his great energy and perserverance, he beâ€" came one of the most successful teachers in the county and after having taught for 20 years he retired from the profession while principal of Elmira School. Several stories written in the Chronicle while under Mr. Bean‘s direction take on a humorous nature when read now, some 80 years later. To the left of the house, there was an apple orchard which extended to Willow Street. No houses were beâ€" hind the house but Mr. Bean remembers there was a woodshed at the back where he "used to get tanned."
