Students at Laurel Vo- cational School got a de- monstration of the antique record players in the Math Centre at the school last week, Mr. and Mrs. Brenner had brought in nine of the machines ranging in age from 1898 to 1925. The sam- pling of gramophones is only a small part of the collection which Mr. Bren- ner started to develop 10 years ago, a time when such antiques were still available and cheap. The Brenner collection now consists of 55 machines most of which are on dis- play each summer at Doon Pioneer Village. Such names as Edisons. Columbias. Mrs. Brenner said, "the machines weren't that ex- pensive." She pointed out they had purchased a vic- trola in the early 1960's for817. The machines now sell ”around $150 to $300 the most expensive ones being those with a horn. He has some 3,000 flat records and 800 cylinders. Most of the cylinders tire in extremely good con- dition, hardly showing their 70years of existence. Mrs. Brenner attributes this to the fact they did not have steel needles used on them. Later the bees wax was combined with a metallic soap compound and finally the last cylinders produced were blue Amberol. The cylinders kept in much better condition than the "flats" as Mrs. Brenner calls the regular records.
