Fire prevention averts tragedy The neglected basement is frequently the cause of house fires. Remove all unnecesâ€" sary combustibles from the basement as well as the atâ€" tic areas. If not removed. they will add considerable fuel to a fire and may be the cause of one starting. Have your furnace cleaned at least once a year and reâ€" Your fire department is ready to help you by proâ€" iding free home inspection !ervice, but the onus of fire revention is on you. In the kitchen, remove pans of cooking fats and oils from the stove when not in use since it is easy to turn on the wrong burner. Unâ€" plug kettles, fry pans and other appliances when not in use and do not hang wearing apparel above the stove to dry where they may fall on a burner. Also make sure there is an approved fire extinguisher easily availâ€" able. Do not use extension cords in place of permanent wiring in the living room. Fire screens for fireplaces are a must to stop flying sparks from landing where they could easily start a fire. Besides providing sufficient electrical outlets for your needs, make sure substanâ€" tial ash trays are available for smokers and ensure the contents are disposed of when all hot ashes have cooled. Get out on the balcony or beâ€" side an open window. Don‘t take for granted someone has already signalled for help. Call the fire departâ€" ment. move oversized fuses. A 15 ampere fuse is sufficient for regular domestic circuits. Have your wiring checked periodically â€" a tidy house seldom burns. Most house fires start between the hours of midâ€" night and six a.m. This means you should be preâ€" pared when you are asleep. If fire breaks out it is esâ€" sential for you to have thought of what you will do and how you will act. First everyone should be alerted and panic avoided. Get evâ€" eryone out fast and close the doors without taking time to dress or pick up valuables. Make sure no one reâ€"enters the building. Give your address first when notifying the fire department. Many panicâ€"stricken callers forâ€" get to disclose the fire‘s location. Thirtyâ€"seven percent of fires start in the living room followed in rank by the kitâ€" chen, basement, bedrooms and other areas. They are likely to start in an area which will block your usual hallâ€"stairway escape. Apartment dwellers should remember to use the stairâ€" ways only in case of fire. Using the elevator could reâ€" sult in being trapped. With Oktoberfest Week starting Friday Oct. 5, fire safety rules should be emâ€" phasized to babysitters. It is the parents responsiâ€" bility to realize only a reâ€" sponsible person should be put in charge of their chilâ€" dren. Know your baby sitter and try to employ a person who lives in the same neighâ€" borhood if possible. The baby sitter should be informed of the fire safety rules and told of location of exits and line of action which should be taken if fire breaks out. Children who are not capâ€" able of taking care of themâ€" selves must never be left alone. It is an indictable ofâ€" fence to leave a child under the age of 10 years alone. There are prescribed meâ€" thods of combating some fires though once started. 51 aPPoinlmcnl akes Pleunne in annonnu'ng tlic opening of an office for pmo[euional vision care at 141 Ontario Street N.
