HISTORIC WATERLOO Something went wrong somewhere. The house at 251 Mary Street has not been showâ€" ing its good side to passers by probably because the city of Waterloo just happened to develop differently than the builder‘s of the house had planned. From Mary Street, the house has got to be rated as the most unusual looking house in Waterloo, as well as ranking up there among the oldest. Going into the back yard though it becomes evident that either the house is backwards or the builders never thought Mary Street was going to be built where it Best side of house is hidden was. The front of the house (which is in the back) is a fine introduction to the massive brick structure which follows it. The detail in design was just coming into popularity in houses in this area when the house was built, reportedly by the Calhoun family in the 1870‘s. Describing the house, now a duplex, as massive is not an exageration. The ceilings on the first floor according to former owner Lincoln Stroh, are 10 feet high, then reach 11 feet high on the second floor and go as high as 12 feet in the attic. There is a conglomeration of styles mixed into the house. Looking at the front., one would expect the same little attention given to dressy detail to be given to the rest of the house. The sides and the back however are plain, giving the impression that style was not desired, only shelter. An impression which the front contradicts. The small porch facing the street is much too small for the size of the house. Mr. Stroh said however at one time he redecorated the house and took off the porch which ran along the entire length of one side. Near the front of the house particularly on the .:eeple the original shingles may be seen. The old etal type shingles have since been replaced on most of the house. Waterloo Mr. Stroh remembers when he first bought the house back in the 1920‘s the land on the Kitchener side of the house was an orchard and a barn was on the other side. At that time the house had four fireâ€" places, two upstairs and two downstairs. The grates on the fireplaces were the old fashioned kind Mr. Stroh said where "you couldn‘t put very much in Kitchener JESSOPS cleaners KITCHENERMWATERALOO Ontario & Duke Sts. Either you kept feeding it with small pieces of wood or else you had to use coal. â€" "That house also has some beautiful flooring in it. There is one layer of white birch and after that a layer of cherry wood. Those floors are still there, or at least they were when I sold the house two years The house. now owned by Christian Lohmer, also seems to have its own air conditioning system. Mr. Stroh said it didn‘t matter how hot it was outside in the summer, the inside of the house always remained cool, possibly because of the three brick thickness. Most brick houses are built with two brick thickâ€" ness* but the three thickness in the Calhoun house plus the layers of lath, plasters and straping have brought the window sills and doorways to about a foot and a half thick. _ There are a few of the original windows still in the house, recognizable by the kind of glass which is slightly wavy when looked through. Basically though, the Calhoun house is hard to describe. It is the type of house which a person might like immediately for its originality or dislike for its plainess. But one fact remains, it is one of Waterloo‘s historic homes. 180 Weber North 578â€"3320 Waterioo North America‘s Only Coast to Coast Network of Exclusive Auto Mufflier Shops View from the street.
