Last week the house, which was an isolation hospital for sometime, was described in Historic Waterloo as a scant eight roomed two storey structure. "There were eight rooms altogether," Mr. Uffel- man said, "four downstairs. four upstairs and a kit- chen at the back. There wasn't a stairway inside the house which led to the upstairs so that had to be built. The only access to the second floor was an enclosed stairway at the back of the house on the outside. ,. Mr. Uffelman, a life hrngiesident of Waterloo re- members his present home as always being an old house a long way out of Waterloo. The house was built on a hill in an area Mr. Uffelman recalls which was used extensively for its' gravel. Directly across from it was Seagram's stables, where race horses were trained. The house contained no bathroom or running water, just a hand pump in the kitchen. One part of the house which has remained to present day is the cherry wood Bill Uflelman and his family must be a patient group to have brought the house at 172 Lincoln Road from what it was to what it is today. A gravel pit' behind the house has been filled in as much as possible and the growth of Waterloo has sur- rounded and gone well past the Uffelman home. Two years of building and renovating are pretty well over now for the Lincoln Road home, or at least while the Uflelmans still own it. Some homes deter- iorate with age, but the Uffelman house certainly has done the opposite. Over the past twenty years the Uffelman house has received a new roof, walls have been knocked out to make some rooms larger. There has been the addition of a family room on the back as well as a large en- trance on the side adjacent to an added garage. The house has some 13 rooms now and there is no evidence it was ever as decrepant of a building as it was in the early 1950’s. Despite the fact trees have been replaced by homes and other building. the house still has a commanding view of the city. Mr. Uflelman spoke with interest about the founda- tion of the house. "The foundation walls are one and a half feet thick and were hand made on the spot with the gravel that was available here. ..
