HISTORIC WATERLOO 180 Weber North 578-3320 Waterloo According to the sixteenth Annual Report of the Waterloo Historical Society, the middle 1850's was a time when "Waterloo really began to show substantial growth. " The reason for this was attributed to the fact owners of a great deal of land in Water- loo adopted the policy of selling and pro- moting rapid settlement. In the year 1854, Elias Snider sold most of his land in Waterloo to John Hoffman and Isaac Weaver for a said price of $32,000. With the land sold by way of a public auc- tion industries began popping up through- out the village and Waterloo's population skyrocketted. In 1852 the population was A seemingly modern building, the con- struction of the above factory is estimated to be around the 1855 mark, a period in time when Waterloo was starting to blos- som. Built in 1855, the structure is presently used in connection with a shirt factory. It is not known what its' use was at the time of building, but it did come into being at one of the most prosperous times in Waterloo’s history. It was demolished in 1965 to make way for the Waterloo Public Library building. The market attracted a large number of people at that time since it was the first of it's kind in the area. The Waterloo market was built prior to the one which has be- come so well known in Kitchener. The building pictured above is presently a shirt factory but the use of it back in the 1850's is unknown.
