Lutheran Life opens in Waterloo A ceremony in Waterioo, yesterday marked the offiâ€" clal birth of Lutheran Life Insurance Society of Canaâ€" da, a society formed to fraternal benefits to Lutherâ€" ans and to assist the Luâ€" theran Church and its inâ€" stitutions. Watched by local civic and community leaders, the society‘s president, Walter L. Rugland, declared the society in business and reâ€" ceived the first batch of applications for insuranee. In an inaugural year mesâ€" sage, Mr. Rugland said the establishment of the sociâ€" ety is a milestone that will bring significant and lasting benefits to Lutherans in As a nonâ€"profit organizaâ€" tion, Lutheran Life will reâ€" turn surplus funds to memâ€" bers and provide financial and other assistance to churches and churchâ€"relatâ€" ed organizations. Formation of Lutheran Life as an independent Canadian organization was sponsored by two U.S.â€"basâ€" ed societies which have operated in Canada for more than 40 years, Aid Association for Lutherans of Appleton, Wis. and Luâ€" theran Brotherhood of Minâ€" neapolis, Minn. The two U.S. organizaâ€" tions have turned over their Canadian operations to Luâ€" theran Life and have withâ€" drawn from Canada to allow the new society to develop programs and services deâ€" signed specifically for Luâ€" therans in Canada. Canadian members of the two U.S. organizations will automatically _ become members of Lutheran Life. There are about 25,000 members in the provinces of British Columbia, Alâ€" berta, Saskatchewan, Maniâ€" toba and Ontario. Harold A. Dietrich, a Reâ€" gina lawyer, is chairman of the board of directors. Other directors are: Alâ€" lan P. Schendel of Waterâ€" loo, D.W. Axford of Calâ€" gary, Fred G.
