14 It‘s one of those gloomy Novemâ€" ber days, with the overcast so low that even the birds are walking. I have a month‘s correspondence to catch up on, three weeks of esâ€" says to read, and a week‘s leafâ€" raking lying in the back yard. My wife has pains in her belly and is going to have the livingâ€" room redecorated. I don‘t know which alarms me more. My daughter is in the next room, writing an essay on Nietsche, an appalling prospect. Asked her how it was going and she said pretty well, but that she had an idea what she was writing was a lot of nonâ€" sense. Two of my colleagues lost their fathers unexpectedly on the weekâ€" end. Another is in hospital having Outside my little world lies a Canada deeply troubled by polluâ€" tion, an unemployment figure that is alarming, and the freedom of the individual under the new government legislation for the prevention of violence. Xâ€"rays on his stomach and hoping it‘s ‘‘only‘"‘ an ulcer. And outside that world again is the big one, a seemingly hopeless mess of population explosion, food shortages, wars, suspicion, desâ€" pair and poverty. Oh well, what the hell. You only go ‘through the course once. It‘s the only life we have, and however bleak it seems, there are always a few rays of sunshine. Looking on the positive side, it‘s not so bad. The correspondenâ€" ce, essays and leaves will eventâ€" ually be dealt with. The livingâ€" room will be decorated, which will cure my wife‘s pains in the belly. My daughter will get a Câ€"minus on her essay and blame me for it, but it won‘t kill her. We all have to lose our fathers sometime. and maybe it will be only an ulcer, which is practically the trademark of a sensitive perâ€" son these days. There‘s not much I can do about pollution except bagging my leavâ€" es instead of burning them, and continuing my refusal to use throwâ€"away bottles. I can‘t do a darn thing about unemployment except get a kid to rake my lawn, and I‘ve tried, and they aren‘t inâ€" terested. And there‘s little I can do about individual freedom except demand it in this column, which 1 shall continue to do, and the govâ€" ernment had better not start monâ€" keying around trying to censor As for the world, it‘s always been a mess. Human beings seem to enjoy living in messes of their own making, unlike other aniâ€" mals. Perhaps that‘s why so many kids are on drugs today. If we tried to force drugs on them, they‘d rebel violently. And those 'rays of sunshine do 171 King S.. The other night at a party, a lady friend was being embraced rather amorously by a middleâ€"agâ€" ed gentleman who had been into the grape. She appealed to me, wideâ€"eyed, over his shoulder. As smoothly as a fight referee, I broke up the clutch and simulâ€" taneously prevented the gentleâ€" man‘s wife from punching him on the nose. The first lady later told my wife that I had the polish and poise of a European man. My wife thought it was a compliment. Considering some of the European males I have known in my life, I thought it an insult. However, a ray of sunshine, though rather murky. I got another one this week,. when a friend described a confirâ€" mation ceremony in a local church. The archbishop himself was there, and it was a big deal for all. The Arch was asking the children what they had learned in their training for confirmation. They provided the stock ansâ€" wers, WI faithfully. Hoping to probe a bit deeper, he asked one little guy what else they had learned. The lad muttered something. The Arch looked rathâ€" er surprised and asked him to reâ€" peat it. Loud and clear, the kid said: "We learned to commit adultery .‘ Apparently, the whole church broke up, including the archbishâ€" op. So, into each life some rain must fall. But, at least until the judgeâ€" ment day, we can always hope for those rays of sunshine. CLASSIFIED \ ADS It‘s a chance to see youUr school system in action. Hunters‘ garb makes excellent survival suit Hunters use boats strictly for transportation â€" a means of getâ€" ting men, dogs and equipment from point A to point B with as few trips as possible. The result is overloaded boats and multiple drownings. The Ontario Safety League emphasizes the need for extra cauâ€" tion when using boats for hunting purposes on the cold waters of fall. Keep loads light, watch the weather and wear protective clothâ€" ing and a lifejacket in case trouble should occur. The average clothes worn by a hunter during the fall season acâ€" tually makes an excellent surâ€" vival suit. Warm underwear with windproof outer clothing, highâ€" cut boots with trousers tucked into the top and a parka jacket which protects the head and throat makes an excellent survival suit when a governmentâ€"approved lifeâ€" jacket is tightly strapped over all. Five die in area accidents Five persons were killed last week in theree accidents investiâ€" gated by the local provincial police detachment. Included was a 20â€"yearâ€" old mother and her 1%â€"yearâ€"old Fifteen persons were injured in accidents in which property damage is estimated at $25,205. There were 31 accidents in all. With the protective clothing deâ€" scribed above and a dependable lifejacket, the same person will still be active and able to help himself after as long as two hours. From OSL research into hunter boating fatalities, it can be stated that few people survive if they attempt to stay with the boat. _ From the case histories, those who made their way to shore, got out of the cold water and found protection and warmth, were the ones who lived. This is an important fact for hunters using boats for transâ€" portation to keep in mind. GERRY BINDSEIL ©10°° OFF! Samsonite 490 Weber St. I\ Waterloo, Ont.
