Initially, Concordia Club adâ€" mitted only men with women taking part in club activities severâ€" al times each year. Over the years this changed. 10 _ Waterloo Chronicle, Thursday, October 8, 1970 Within a few years Concordia Club was organizing international Saengerfests. Choirs competed from all over Canada and the United States. The Kâ€"W Oktoberfest has been a huge success from its inception, mainly because of the great Gerâ€" man heritage of the Twin Cities and Kitchener‘s four Germanâ€" Canadian social clubs. Largest Germanâ€"Canadian club and one with the longest history in Kitchener is Concordia. Formed in 1873 when the city was a town of 4,000 called Berlin, Concordia Club today has a membership of more than half that number. Original members were songâ€" loving newcomers from different parts of Germany. They formed an allâ€"maie choir which became famous almost overnight. Their succulent cabbage rolls, stuffed peppers and szegediner gulasch are unmatched any where. Noted throughout the world for their lovely women, the Transylâ€" vanians in Kitchener are no excepâ€" tion. In 1969, one of their pretty young frauleins was selected Miss Kâ€"W Oktoberfest. In 1928 they founded the Transyâ€" Ivanian Saxon sick benefit and reâ€" lief association in Kitchener but it wasn‘t until 1951 that the group decided to establish a social club. Two years later the club built its first clubhouse as a meeting place where they could keep alive their ethnic heritage through song, fellowship and other culâ€" tural and sports activities. Transylvanians are also famous for their culinary skills. The first Transylvanians imâ€" migrated to North America at the close of the 19th century and again in the late 1920s. | The neighboring Hungarians, assuming them to have come from Saxonia, called the newcomers Transylvania Saxons. The Transylvanian people are of German origin who emigrated 825 years ago from Luxembourg and Moselleâ€"Rhine to settle in the central highlands of Romania, then Hungarian crown land. Kitchener In 1969, the Club purchased a large wooded parkland for the enjoyment of its members. The recreation area was subsequently named Gottscheer Park. Since that year the club has grown in membership and size. The premises have been expanded twice and are currently being enâ€" larged further with the construcâ€" tion of a new kitchen and dining room. A committee under president Richard Mausser undertook the job of financing and building a suitable clubhouse. A parcel of land was purchased and, in 1958, the new club facilities at 464 Maple St.. Kitchener, opened. The Alpine Club came into being in 1953 when Wilhelm Hoegler realized his home could no longer accommodate all his friends from the old country who gathered freâ€" quently to sing, dance and reminisâ€" ce. So a club was formed and local dance halls were rented for social events. What started out as small social gatherings soon _ mushroomed into huge events that made it eviâ€" dent a permanent club house was required. Youngest of the four Kitchener Germanâ€"Canadian clubs is the Alpine Club. Most of its members hail originally from Gottschee (Yugoslavia). Today the club has more than 800 members. Its activities include a women‘s auxiliary, dance group, children and youth clubs, a gymâ€" nastic club and a bowling league. The women in the club are conâ€" sidered first class cooks and are proud of their mouthwatering specialties such as sauerbraten, wienerschnitzel and apfelstrudel. The Kitchener Schwaben Club was founded in 1931 by a handful of men under the leadership of Wilhelm Goss who become the first president. The club‘s objecâ€" tive was to provide financial aid to members in case of illness and to form a cordial brotherhood. In later years, however, land became _ scarce â€" and _ two wars left their mark. Most Schâ€" waben _ left their â€" hardfought homeland and, like their ancesâ€" tors, sought new homes where their children could live in freeâ€" dom and justice. Many found such a home in Canada, principally in Kitchener and Waterloo.
