~_First Oktoberfest honored _ Bavarian couple‘s wedding Oktoberfest was first conceived in 1810 when a Bavarian soldier. Franz Baumgartner,© suggested that horse races be held in Munich to celebrate the wedding of Ludwig 24â€"yearâ€"old crown prince of Bavaâ€" ria The prince agreed and the races were a â€" tremendous . success Horsemen _ represented _ stables from all over Bavaria and 40,000 people attended the events Afterwards, officers of the naâ€" tional guards feasted and drank toasts. Baumgartner‘s commandâ€" ing officer proposed that the races become an annual affair held on the Theresienwiese, fields named in honor of Ludwig‘s bride. In 1811,.. agricultural exhibits were added to the races. Das Octoberfest, Bavaria‘s national holiday, was born. Beer tents were added in 1818 and have since become a major attraction of the Munich festival. The mammoth tents are usually packed by noon and parents and children stand on benches and tables to sing and drink toasts. Drunkenness is rare in Munich during the event.
