1 payers are still waiting for some good reasons as to how it will beneâ€" fit them to amalgamate. To be effective, child restraints must be anchored to the frame of the car. With recommended moâ€" dels this is done by using the regâ€" ular seat belts. We have a leaflet Automotive accessory stores sell various types of child reâ€" straints, sometimes under the dangerously misleading descripâ€" tion of ‘"child safety seats."" These have some safety value in ordinâ€" ary driving conditions, since they can prevent restless toddlers from distracting or impeding the driver. or playing with door catches. But in a crash most of the child seats are practically useless. In fact. some of the seats that clip on the back of a bench seat teeâ€"up the child to a position where the risk of injury may be greater than if he had no reâ€" straint at all. So why amalgamate? We have lived happily side by side in the past. Let us continue to do so. Why spoil a beautiful friendship? Some parents, through ignorâ€" ance or indifference, actually exâ€" pose children to extra danger in a carâ€"for example by allowing a child to stand on the front seat, from which he could be thrown and seriously hurt simply by sudâ€" den application of the brakes; or by holding a baby on| one‘s lap in front, where he could be crushed in collision by the adult‘s body. Speaking for Waterloo, what other city in Canada has such a personable mayor and hardâ€"workâ€" ing council? What other city has the tremendous talent of Mr. Presâ€" ton, Mr. Schaefer and Mr. Dutton? Waterloo citizens have earned these type of men by taking more interest at the polling booth. (Kitchener can do the same. There are some good men in Kitchener. They only need cultivating. ) Coâ€"operate, Yes â€" Amalgamate, No. Canadians show <a deplorable lack of concern for the safety of young children in cars. In Ontarâ€" i0 in 1969, 21 passengers under the age of five were killed, and 1,514 were injured. Many of these conâ€" tinuing tragedies could be avoidâ€" ed by the use of the proper reâ€" straints, but few parents make a real effort to protect their childâ€" ren from the effects of a possible crash. There must be thousands of Kitchener citizens proud of the honorable name of Kitchener. (They had the name of the city changed once: Why change it aâ€" gain?) By the way, we love Kitchener but as a good neighbor as we do Preston, Elmira, St. Jacobs and all other Waterloo County comâ€" munities. But we do not want to marry them or amalgamate with them. (The feeling is no doubt muâ€" tual.) â€" So why amalgamate? Waterloo is a friendly, clean, law abiding, well run city. Let‘s keep it that way. Here is a quote from Dr. Stewâ€" art Fyfe â€" ‘‘The quality of service in the present City of Waterloo is good and the city is exceptionally wellâ€"staffed." (Where is there a more peaceâ€" ful university city in Canada? Our group of students are Canada‘s finest.) They have plenty of reasons not to â€"i.e. lower taxes; free parking ; a much more spacious and better downtown shopping area; a betâ€" ter managed city with a friendly and easily accessible mayor and city hall staff; lower garbage costs; never any shortage of good fluoridated water (Look folks â€" fewer cavaties); a friendlier efâ€" ficient police force, consequently less crime. Waterloo residents and taxâ€" ALAN RIGBY Chronicle readers‘ letters to the editor Armed robbery of service staâ€" tions in Southern California has become so prevalent that special protective measures are being taken. Stations staying open after 10 p.m. now sell gas only by creâ€" dit card, certified cheque or an exact amount of cash which is promplty dropped into a noâ€"key night vault to be opened the folâ€" lowing day. For how can one cherish 200 years of militant and economical expansion, saving myself to say ‘"‘imperial interests."‘ No country throughout history has indeed in such a short peâ€" riod of time devastated the This particular article is a significant example of false understanding of world affairs, which no doubt greatly prevails in this country. In your issue of Aug. 20 I unâ€" fortunately and inevitably had to stumble across a letter by Patricia Young. No doubt there are readers in your area who are unaware of this annual getâ€"together and it is suggested that those who have not received an invitation may contact me. On Saturday night, a banquet has been arranged with dancing later to the nostalgic tunes of the 1940s. Former commanding ofâ€" ficers will be attending and Maâ€" jorâ€"General A. C. Hull, DFC, CD, will be guest speaker. There will be the usual Harvard air show over the golf course in the afternoon followed by a fly past during the memorial service which takes place at the Harvard aircraft erected by the associaâ€" tion in 1964 in memory of the 47 airmen who were killed on the station between 1940 and 1945. The celebration will begin with a reception for early comers on Friday, Sept. 18 at the Dunnville Golf and Country Club. Saturday morning, the annual golf tournâ€" ament for the now famed Clare Thunderâ€"Mug trophy will be held. Preparations are under way to make this silver anniversary a big occasion and any publicity you can give to this event will be appreciated. To our knowledge, this is the only reunion of an RCAF station held each year since 1945 and the coâ€"operation of newspaper editors in the past has greatly increased our mailâ€" ing list and added to their sucâ€" and listing the prices and retail outlets where they can be bought. We are working to improve the protection given to children in cars, and if any of your readers who have knowledge of an infant or young child who was wearing a child restraint at the time of a car crash would send us any releâ€" vant particulars as to its effectiveâ€" ness, or otherwise, we would be grateful. Even brief outlines would be very helpful. If possible, the information should _ include: © Approximate date; description of child reâ€" straint in use; type and severity of the crash; type and extent of injuries to the child, if any; inâ€" juries, if any, to adults in car (say if wearing seat belts); type turn to Dunnville this Sept. 18 to 20 to celebrate their 25th annual reunion. 208 King St. W., Toronto 1. Frankly, there is neither a ‘‘vicious minority‘‘ nor a ‘"silent majority‘‘ in Canada. â€" Since this nation lacks a sense of nationalism but in no way to be compared to that of Germany‘s during the Second World War.
