'i‘he event' is being convened by Mrs. Jack Whaley and marks the first time a Roman Catholic Church has bosted the annual ceremony. Mrs. Hugh Morrison will be Mrs. Whaley‘s assistant. Planners behind the day‘s program are Mrs. John Enns, last year‘s key woman, Mrs. Wilfred Schweitzer, Waterloo Rotary Club will join nearly 14,000 Rotary clubs in 147 countries this week to celebraté the 65th anniversary of the foundâ€" ing of the worldwide service orâ€" ganization. According to president Al Selâ€" wood the club will mark the occasion with a program featurâ€" ing their annual Easter Seals campaign. Rotary, the first service club for business and professional men, was organized by Paul P. Harris, a Chicago lawyer from Vermont, on Feb. 23, 1905. As a "cure" for loneliness in the big city, he proposed his idea for a club to three other men, a coal dealer, a mining enâ€" gineer, and a tailor. Because subsequent meetings were held in members‘ offices in rotation, Harris suggested the name Roâ€" The first meeting of the Roâ€" tary Club of Chicago was held in February, 1905. By August, the club had 21 members, most of them from small towns. By 1912, there were 50 Rotary clubs and 5.000 Rotarians. The movement had now spread toâ€"Canada, Engâ€" land, Freland and Scotland. Today, there are more than 658,000 business and professionâ€" al men around the globe who wear the distinctive cogwheel emblem of Rotary International. The Waterloo club, with 60 members supports the local Cripâ€" pled Chidren‘s Centre and other community projects.
