â€" Expressing the theme "What Christmas means to me," Caraâ€" dian children from coast to coast will be invited to contribute their own drawings, which will be used to produce distinctive stamp deâ€" sitns reflecting: the oviginality and freshness of young minds. Traditionally the post office isâ€" sues two special stamps each year to mark the Christmas season and normally these stamps, as is the case with all philatolic proâ€" ducts, are designed by profesâ€" sional artists. Several designs by children will be used for next Christmas. The children will be invited to participate in the project by submitting their personally exeâ€" cuted designs between Dec. 1, 1969 and Jan. 15. 1970. Selection will be made initially on a proâ€" vincial basis and subsequently, at the national level. Departments of education in every province are coâ€"operating with the project, which will coâ€" incide with International Educaâ€" tion Year in 1970. * To assist with the preâ€"selecâ€" tion of designs, the post office has enlisted the aid of provinâ€" cial panels including directors of art galleries, artists, art educaâ€" tors and members of the adviâ€" sory committee on stamp design. When final selections on the national level have been made by the advisory committee, the post office plans to invite the successful young entrants, with a parent or guardian, to Ottawa where they will be able to view A Christmas stamp design proâ€" jeci directed to an »stimated 6.000,000 children under the age of 13 is being launched by the post office. The letter from Mrs. J. P. Dyâ€" ment in the most recent issue of The Chronicle points up the plight of those unfortunate Waterloo citizens who, though paying very heary municipal taxes, bave been thoroughly neglected by our civic Seaders. Adequate public transâ€" port is essential to the welfare . On repeated occasions I have nurged that use be made of the Grand River Railway tracks or Fightâ€"ofâ€"way for public transport Af some kind. No attention has ‘been paid to these suggestions. LTet me go over the matter again: There should be a twinâ€"track monâ€" ‘wrail between Waterloo Square ‘and the University of Waterloo, following the aboveâ€"mentioned Trightâ€"ofâ€"way, and this should be ‘extended to the Lakeshore disâ€" ftrict. It could loop back via the University of Waterloo Student Village area and follow the cenâ€" tral boulevard on Westmount Road and University Avenue to the original track, then head back to Waterloo Square. I submit that this system would (a) put Waterloo ahead of the rest of Canada, (b) avoid horribly expensive, _ property â€" destroying and quicklyâ€"obsolete roadâ€"widenâ€" ing projects, (c) fulfil a very real need, and (d) pay for itself both through fares and by rendering much roadâ€"building unnecessary. Stampâ€"design sweepstakes set for next Yule issue ef this city and has been given Bbottom priority. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION & RATESs 125 VUnion St. E. Laler, with the aid of the galâ€" leries, touring exhibitions of the drawings and designs subimitted will be organized for the public. Children‘s art, moreover, has berome one of the fastest growâ€" ing interests in recent vears. the production of stamps from their ‘drawings. The tournament was heid at Eastwood collegiate in Kitchener. Twelve schools competed for troâ€" phies presented by the county school board. Waterloo‘s entry, MacGregor school, failed to capture any of the top places at the first Waterâ€" loo County senior girls public school volleyball tournament, Satâ€" urday. If our leaders refuse to buy the monorail project, then why not try putting an ordinary bus, with flanged wheels, on the GRR tracks? This would make the trip from downtown Waterioo to the University in four or five minâ€" utes, avoiding all traffic jams, and to Lakeshore Village in a few minutes. It would cost remarkably little, and would certainly make a big difference to those who live in the northern part of town. JAMES C. McKEGNEY. So the battle is on and our city fathers created it. This trial bus run in Lakeshore Village still leaves us housewives and mothers (who don‘t work outside their homes and those who belong to a onecar family) to window shop through catalogues and to be satâ€" isfied to just roam about the vilâ€" lage. How thoughtful of you alâ€" though, to give us this 9 a.m. run to town and at the same time settle our diet problems since we‘re not brought back till after 3 p.m. Six hours of jogging around town too, should slim us down. And never mind about those preâ€"schoolers some mothers may have with them. as there are plenty of rest rooms around, or MacGregor competes in volleybalil Teams from Stanley Park, Sunâ€" nyside and Breslau schools walkâ€" ed off with the top trophies from the day‘s events. Ideally, the system should follow the Grand River or CN lines to east Kitchener, thus taking a great load off King and Weber Streets. 6000 aC Sir: However, the local team defeatâ€" ed St. Andrew‘s school from Galt in the Grade 7 A league and tied with Courtland school, Kitchener, in the same event. But then again, all‘s not lost, as Ald. Herb Epp pointed out to me, "There are taxicabs."
