" By JOHN BRADSHAW i' The day lily is fast becoming we of the most popular garden perennials. There's no showier, more dependable and less trouble- iome plant than the modern day tny, or Hemerocallis, as it's brown botanically. ' This perennial survives heat in bummer, cold in winter, indiffe- yent soil, little or no care, and has a long blooming season of bright cheerful colors. The color - is from the polest yellow through creams, oranges, tans, browns, maroons and greenish tint. to almost lavender-pink and I don't know of a perennial that Is longer lived and which never seems to be attacked by either insects or diseases.. Day lilies bow well in either full sun or light shade, and in any part of the country. _ Gardening Soil conditions don't need to be nearly as good for day lilies as they would for a tall and vigorous growing plant such as a delphin- ium. True enough a garden loam is best, but daily lilies grow well even in soils that in sand or clay, especially if one third humus is added before planting. The following forms of humus have all proved satisfactory: composted cattle manures, grass clippings, peat moss, material from the home compost heap or discarded mushroom imanure. Mix these thoroughly with the soil to a depth of l2 inches. At the same time add a complete garden fertilizer at the rate of one pound per 25 square feet. Your choice of varieties and colors is almost endless and will fit any taste. There are tall ones four-feet high, and miniature; early, midseason and late bloom- ers; circular flowers and pointed, or star-shaped ones. The uses of day lilies are just as varied. They can be planted in mixed borders, in foundation planting, in beds to help outline walks or driveways, in shrub borders to lengthen the season of bloom, and with annuals to lend variety and a feeling of perman- Day lilies differ considerably from the true, more widely known lilies. At one time each day-lily blossom lasted but one day, but was replaced by a fresh one the next day. However, many of the newer varieties have flowers which last for several days. Fleshy roots resembling small sweet potatoes, are lormed ln- stead of bulbs. The showy parts of the flower form a slender tube which mares attractively. Planting time is either early in the spring, or the period between TOP A.YtsTS-Tttrqq Grade ' M from St. David's ”In sehoot. 4 High St., you print- vinnon in the COMB Halon-I lxhlbmon‘s school on adieu. The best plan of all is to visit nurseries and test gardens in the summer, to see day lilies in bloom, so that you'll be able to choose the varieties you wish to plant in late summer. A few day lilies can be grown from seed, but normally plants are obtained by dividing the existing roots after the blooming season is over. In preparing the planting site. dig a hole twice as deep and wide as the longest roots. The depth you plant is very import, ant. Set the crown so that it's no more than one-half an inch below the surface of the soil when the planting is finished. You won't have any trouble recognizing the crown of the day lily; it's where the leaves and stem join the roots. Day lilies will need dividing every three or four years. When doing this necessary chore to a large clump of day lilies, leave two or three leafy units together (including their roots) to ensure a vigorous' start. As for varieties, there are act- ually thousands of different kinds. All one needs to do is to visit a local nursery or garden centre with a good selection of them.
