Hedges should be pruned from the time of planting so that they‘re wider at the bottom than the top. If left unpruned, any hedge will naturally grow wider to the top than the bottom. This keeps the sun, rainfall and air away from the bottom of the hedge and prevents the trunk from throwing out branches close to the ground. It isn‘t long beâ€" fore a series of unsightly holes develop which completely spoil the appearance of the hedge and surrounding garden. The failure of most hedges to fulfil this ideal situation can be blamed â€" on the wrong kind of hedge material, incorrect ~shapâ€" ing jand pruning from the time the. hedge was planted, and a lack of regular feeding with humus and fertilizer. M Fastâ€"growing hedges such as Chinese eIm and others will soon develop a series of holes along the‘ bottom because this widely planted material is not true hedge plant in any sense. It‘s a tree that sooner or later will reach 60 feet in height. Several years after planting, the trunk starts to rapidly expand and stops proâ€" ducing branches close to the base of the trunk. There‘s nothing that can be done to counteract this tendency. There are very few locations anywhere that justâ€" ify the use of Chinese eim as a hedge. Just as soon as the hedge is set in the ground is the time to start shaping it. Most plants will be 13 to 15 inches high at planting time. Here‘s a spot where you must be quite ruthless and prune the branches back to six to eight inches in length, keeping the bottom wider than the top. Prune back several times durâ€" ing the first growing season, but not after Aug. 15. The latter deadline will apply to any year in ‘the life history of the ‘hedge. Such heavy pruning will© force thd hedge plants to thicken out close to the ground. ‘â€" e following spring, before d-r;eaves appear, cut to a height Hédges are now growing vigorâ€" ously. If they‘ve been cared for correctly, they should be green and healthy with the sides either straight up and down or gently sloping towards the top. There shogldn‘t be a series of holes devéloping along the bottom. Gardening If you‘ve got hedges, prune By JOHN BRADSHAW June Is a good time to start pruning and fertilizing your hedge. really â€" ti branch is of place. I find that many home gardenâ€" ers don‘t have too accurate an eye when it comes to pruning a mature hedge. Best way of havâ€" ing an even hedge is to use the stake and line method. In using the latter, you insert four stakes, one at each corner of the hedge and use a stout line to connect them at the height required. Check to see that the line is really tight and that the odd branch is not pushing the line out Jt‘s not a goog plan to trim right to the line or you may find yourself cutting it from time to time. Stay at least one inckh away from it. If you are using electric hedge clippers, keep the cord beâ€" hind you and slung over your shoulder at all times to make sure you don‘t accidentaily cut it. In the case of a long hedge, you‘ll need to keep moving the stakes, completing the pruning in secâ€" tions. flat one. This will ensure that the top of the hedge won‘t be broken down by the excessive weight of the snow. It won‘t be too long until most hedges will be attacked by a of one foot. Just as soon as the leaves are fully out in June, beâ€" gin regular pruning, keeping the hedge wellâ€"shaped as you prune. In doing this, taper the sides gradually so that the bottom of the hedge will be distinctly wider at the bottom than the top. If you live in the snow belt, then a curved top is preferable to a Lower Mail WEDDING SPECIAL Full Photo Coverage In Living Color You Get â€" One 8x 10 Album Plus â€" Two 4x5 Albums Passport, Citizenship, Portraits, Fashion, Children Animal Pictures taken In Our Studio ONLY $145.00 PHOTOâ€"ART 578â€"7860 To keep the hedge weedâ€"free you use one of the preâ€"emergence weed preventors which kill weed seeds as they germinate. These can be bought either as a seâ€" parate chemical or mixed with a complete fertilizer or plant food. Apply them at the rate reâ€" commended by the manufacturer. Composted cattle manure, wellâ€" rotted â€" barnyard â€" manure, disâ€" carded mushroom manure, peat moss or material from the home compost heap are all excellent forms of humus to use for this purpose. Apply a two inch layer to the top of the soil and cultiâ€" vate it in. Just as soon as you‘ve pruned your hedge in June is the time to give it a feeding with a comâ€" plete plant food or ,fertilizer. Most of these are applied at the rate of one pound per 25 square feet of hedge area to both sides of the hedge. Work the plant foog into tne top two or three inches of suil. If your hedge is not in a neaithy condition it will also pay to work some humus into the soil on either side of the hedge. An even better way of doing it would be to use one of the liquid or dry systemic insecticides which are now on the market. These are absorbed into the sap stream of the plants and the flres are quickly killed when they attack the leaves. tiny fly which bores thousands of holes in the foliage. A regular spraying every week with an allâ€" purpose â€" insecticide containing malathion will keep this pest unâ€" der control. Waterloo Square I am new to Ontario, but i was able to secure a driving permit. Last woek | was travelling on a highway and 1 noticed markings painted that looked like a "T" painted upside down. What do These are what we call white Tâ€"shaped gauges and they are painted on the roadway every oneâ€" quarter mile. They are used by our aircraft patrol. y To determine vehicle speeds, aircraft observers "clock" a car from one marker to the next. Courts in Ontario have found that calculating the speed of vehicular traffic on the highway by use of aircraft, in this manner, is a very accurate and reliable method of determining the exact speed of the vehicle. Riding on the right hand side travelling with the traffic is the correct way. A bicycle or tricycle is a vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act, and the driver of these vehicles must obey all rules pertaining to vehicles. Is it, or is it not unlawful to ride two on a bicycle? 1 can sure tell spring is here because 1 am seeing more and more bicycles on the road, but alâ€" ready | am confused. 1 have met chiidren riding biâ€" cycles and they were riding on the left side facing traffic. 1 have seen them ridingâ€" on the rloh; hand side aiso, travelling with the traffic.
