Under the coâ€"operaâ€" tive teaching option plan, graduâ€" ates of the fourâ€"year courses in honors mathematics would have 16 months of high school experiâ€" ence. Graduates of the three year general course would have 12 months‘ experience in the schools. "Sthdents will take the reguâ€" lar mathematics program with option subjects in areas related to secondary school teaching, such as psychology, philosophy, history and science. During their terms in the school systems they will be able to progress through every phase of a teacher‘s duties, from marking papers and conâ€" ducting tutorials to practice teaâ€" ching." Alex F. Duncan, superintendâ€" ent of secondary schools, Kitchâ€" enerâ€"Waterloo high school board, said, "with the University of Waâ€" terloo located in our own comâ€" munity, the new coâ€"operative mathematics teaching option should be a great boon in heipâ€" ing our local schools to obtain mathematics teachers. ‘"The heads of our mathematics departments took part in the planning of this program which is designed to provide a great deal of experience in teacher deâ€" velopment and education." The Waterloo plan has already been endorsed by the Ontario Seâ€" condary School Teachers‘ Federâ€" ation. School board officials are enthusiastic about the program and its potential. The students will return to campus â€" At the end of April they will return to university for the last hailf of their second year and will enter their second training term in September. â€" In January, after they have completed the first half of their second year, they will be assignâ€" ed to their first high school training term. Waterâ€" loo began using the interview technique last fall with its new course in architectual studies. The faculty of mathematics was formed at Waterloo last year, the first time in North America that mathematics had achieved faculty status. It began operations last fall with an enroiment of more than 1,400 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. At this point they will have completed the regular 32 months of university work plus 16 months of high school teaching experience.
