92 The Waterieo Chronicie, Wednesday, September 27 1967 Symbols of a beginning CORPORATION CITY OF WATERLOO WATERLOO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE In addition to a wide diversity of industry, the idea of coâ€"operation in insurance was conceived. early in the city‘s history. Today, six major insurance companies have their head offices in Waterloo. The widely known Conestoga Wagon was first home for early settlers who came from Pennsylvania in the spring of 1806. From this humble beginning . . . fortyâ€"eight wagons in all . . . the City of Waterloo was born. In time, more and more settlers came, and on January 1, 1857, Waterloo was incorporated as a village . . . in 1876 it became a town. In 1890 the Board of Trade, now the Chamber of Commerce, was incorporated. Everywhere a healthy, steady growth was in evidence. j They were an industrious band of Godâ€"fearing, hardâ€"working people who toiled from dawn to dusk, and still found time to enjoy the fruits of their labors. The city‘s two universities have taken an important part in all phases of graduate studies, and their continued expansion has been phenomenal. Today, Waterloo is one of Canada‘s most promising cities, playing a significant role in the development of this nation. This will become increasingly important in Canada‘s second century. On the occasion of Canada‘s Centennial Celebration, we pause to express our gratitude to the founders of our city and this nation.
