Beware of being overprotective! Remember that cveryone's goal is total recovery. This is best achieved by encouraging the reasonable shouldering of previous responsibilities. Ficnd your questions for this column lo: Canadian Mental Health Association. 54 King Street South, Waterloo. B? ROLAND HERSEN C.M.H.A. Executive Director WHAT SHOULD BE THE FAMILY ATTITUDE TOWARD THE MENTAL PATIENT WHO HAS RETURNED HOME? First. let me say that it's not easy to be consistently helpful and objective, for in many instances the illness revolved around family relationships. The family's goal, however. should be to treat the re- turned patient as a mature, normal adult, confidently expecting him to fill his role as a member of the family. He has the right to get upset and disagree ---iust as the rest of us do! Remember that this mental patient. once seriously ill. now is well enough to try life outside the mental hospital, If he leaves the hos. pital with no help from anyone. he stands a 5050 chance of being back within a year. Like most other mental patients about to be re- leased. he needs a "lifeline". He needs support. guidance and special services to help him on his way back to the community, and to give him the best chance of recovering from his illness. The prime goal. for all of us. should be to maintain warm relation- ships with each other. setting limits of tolerance but not demanding that everyone conform to every mode. 6. This one we did not list last week. but we shall call her the "tidy housewife." she is the lady that gathers all the old news- papers, magazines, hat boxes, suit boxes and other combustible materials and stores it in the at. tie or on the attic steps - for a future fire, 5, The "thoughtless husband or father", is the gentleman who empties hot ashes and coals into wooden or cardboard containers or even dumps them on the base- meat floor next to wooden parti- tions, old newspapers and rub- bish. This gentleman accounts for one out of every eleven home fires. 4, The "foolhardy home dry cleaner", is the person who uses gasoline, kerosene and, other flammable liquids for home dry cleaning, and keeps those and other flammable liquids in break- able bottles and leaking cans, HAT 3.
