A four-year Bachelor of Phy- sical and Health Education pro- gram, operated on _Waterloo’s popular eo-operative education timetable, will begin in Septeaw ber 1967, said Professor Pugliese. A unique academic program in physical education, to begin next year at the University of Waterloo, was announced today by Professor Dan Pugliese, di- rector of the university's new School of Physical and Health Education. "The course will help develop a highly qualified professional in physical education," said Pro. fessor Puglieise. "We expect that graduates will play major roles in school programs, community recreation programs and other areas of physical and health edu- cation activities." Students will spend eight four. month terms at university for academic studies alternated with six similar terms with profes- sional organizations to gain prac- tieal experience. The academic program offers the same flexibility as Waterloo's other co-operative education courses. Students will take a total of 24 courses including 13 in physical education and four in biology, English, psychology and sociology. In addition, stu- dents will take seven elective Under the eo-operative plan, students will spend their first year at university and will work in recreation situations the fol- lowing summer. They will then alternate ltour month academic terms with four month profes- sional training terms for the dur- ation of their course. Former YMCA executive, Jack Pearse, of Ottawa, has been ap- pointed program co-ordinator to work with education and re-hab ilitation institutions, community recreation boards, s u m m e r camps, and the YMCA, YWCA, and YMHA. Mr. Pearse, a graduate of the University of Toronto, is host of “Jack in the Box", a CBC chil- dren's television program and courses in arts, science or the social sciences depending on whether they want to pursue teaching careers or plan to en- ter agency work.
