?2 The billions of taxpayers' dol, lars invested in space age re- search are beginning to pay handsome dividends back on earth, according to Roy Henning, manager of Belmont Electronics, Ltd., Kitchener communication systems specialists. Kitchener Communications Expert Reports Break " through In School Electronics When he and Carl Henning, the company's sales consultant, re- ently returned from a 2-day elec- tronic engineering conference in Philadelphia, Perma., he told a Chronicle reporter that "people won't have to depend on a moon landing for a pay-off on their investment, because practical benefits already are being real. ized in everyday life." Crediting space-inspired ad- vances in solid-state electronics, Roy Henning cited the develop- ment of “Servo-communications" for schools as a major dividend. This new concept, he said, in. corporates for the first time in a single system the control of clocks. classroom break signals. intercoms; closed circuit auto. matic telephones. radio and re- corded broadcast distribution, vandalism protection, fire evac- uation, voice instruction, electric power, heating and other utili- ties. and a number of devices to protect children and ease the growing burden of school ad- ministration. Servo - communications is the invention of DuKane Corpora- tion, St. Charles, Illinois, an elee. tronics manufacturing firm which, in addition to being a major producer of school sound systems and language laborator- ies, also produces electronic components for the U.S. army, navy, air force and space ad- ministrations. Called "Servo. com" for short. the name was derived from two basic engin- eering functions, servo-mechan- isms and communications. which the company has combined. " All services are installed through consolidation in a single conduit; use several mutual "solid-state" components: re- quire only one panel to house clocks, speakersond vandalism control in individual rooms; and reduce duplication of hardware to a minimum. Since the con- duit contains all basic wiring for all services, the addition of future functions, or expansion of the building, can be achieved without costly re-wirlng. These properties, ny DuKane engin- CLOSE-UP VIEW of "Peg Tape" control in the new "Servo-communications" system for schools. Heart of the Servo-com is a master clock of unique design. controlled by a patented mylar plastic "peg tape" on which can be programmed instructions. to people and machine alike, for any minute of the day for a whole school year. One of the features of the program device is its ability to be quickly sched- uled or rescheduled at will by authorized administrative person- nel. Prior systems often requir- ed calling in outside clock and electronic experts to make com- plicated adjustments. The heavy mylar tape is said to be virtually indestructible and may be used over and over again' indefinitely. Beside controlling, correcting and synchronizing all clocks and classroom break signals. the master clock is capable; of issuing on and off impulses' to heating. ventilating. cooling. pumping. illuminating and shin- jlar utilities according to pre- arranged plan. As a dual-coded system. the Servo - com utility, control also innovates with a positive built-in instantaneous readback which reports whether or not instructions to remote ma. chinery and equipment have been carried out. Lock-out safe. ty switches, operated with keys by authorized personnel. at utili- ties and machines, permit safe inspection and repair through overriding of programmed ord- ers from the administrative con- trol center.
