Of course, an auction sale is a much more exciting game than subtle; the plays and end are all there â€" but hidder strategy is insidiously everâ€"preâ€" and is working his way through a Hootenanny collection of recâ€" ords by the simple process of buying Canadian pine cheap at auctions, finishing it and selling it to all our friendsâ€"dear. They buyâ€"because they have children who‘ll be coming around to our door â€" selling . magazines . and Christmas cards. tion of the unknown, the rare exemplary treasure waiting just for you, the unique collector‘s piece to be brought for a song. I just wish you could see what L got at the last sale. There was a lovely old cherry desk that I sensed was going to go for peanuts and 1 just couldn‘t bear it so I bid on it and got it for $60. The only trouble seems to be that it is too low to write on. It makes a good potting shelf in the garage. And there was the most beauâ€" tiful old wicker chair with wings Of course, part of the exciteâ€" ment about Saturday‘s auction is that sweet tingling anticipeâ€" on it, curlicues and twisted rafia and reed and one leg off, that would present a real challenge to anyone who likes that sort of challenge. I bid up to ten dollars to get it. And then, by chance, 1 looked over to see who had been bidding so vociferousâ€" ly against me and there sat an old friend, glowering at me over her glasses. Now every time I call, they say she is out. And after I got that chair the most beautiful little Heintzrman piano came up. It was plain, simple, elegant, without the usâ€" ual carvings, gargoyles and gold paint which seem to characterâ€" ize pianos that come up for sale at country auctions. And that auctioneer was clever, indeed. He had, by chance, a pianist on hand who could really play and they would auction a bit and get up to $50 and then the auctionâ€" |eer would say: "Now, ladies and gentlemen, you‘re not going to let that beauâ€" tiful piano go for $50. That‘s a disgrace. Play again, Al." And Al would play "East Side, West Side" again and the aucâ€" tion proceeded to $120 and the auctioneer berated the crowd, and Al played "East Side, West Side". again and the price got up to $170. And I kept sayingâ€"as 1 was supposed to say â€" "Jonathan, Jonathan, we can‘t let that piano go for only $170." And Jonathan kept saying, "but mother, we HAVE a Piâ€" And finally some man got it for $180 because Jonathan put his hand over my mouth. And I haven‘t had a good night‘s sleep since. A piano like that for only $180! Now it takes some time and considerable remorse to become successful at auction sales. But I do have some Rules of Thumb I am happy to pass on to you to help you on your way as the rage for Canadiana envelops the country and the stampede to the country auction gets like Friâ€" day night Bingo. Always get to know the dealâ€" ers and keep an eye on them. If they bid. the thing is "good" â€"by that 1 mean it can be sold to somebody, somewhere, someâ€" how, sometime. And don‘t be afraid to outbid them. Remembâ€" er, they have to make their 50 per cent profit on each piece and you don‘t. All you have to do is to take the piece down yourself and Jonathan and I have worked it out to a profit if you don‘t charge anything for your own labour. Well, maybe five cents. _ Or you can run around from place to place and little town to lilttle town looking for a little man who will do the picce down for you for anything from douâ€" ble to 30 times what you paid for it. But if it is a "good" piece and you know its retail value, then it is worth tracking down the little man, waiting the twoâ€" andâ€"aâ€"balf years until he bas fiâ€" nished the job and then payâ€" ing him his price You just have to have soms higher economic theories at your fingertips. That‘s ':ll And of course, if you don‘t have them, you can alw~>s make (Contimned _ on 3)
