Initiation stunts used to be trouâ€" blesome, worrysome affairs. Garâ€" bage cans used to be turned over, bon fires lit and all sorts of useless activity. Shinerama was conceived as a sensible and useful project to get the students through the excitement of initiaâ€" tion. The proceeds from Shinerâ€" Students will be Jocated on all principal street corners and shopâ€" ping centres as well as in office buildings and in factories. Friday, September ?1th is the date of this year‘s Shinerama. Teams of 5 or 6 students will be at the doors of factories and in the downtown business district early in the morning and they will shine all day long returning to Campus between 7:00 and 9:00 in the evening. The students of Waterioo Uniâ€" versity College do the actual shiâ€" hing of the shoes. About 500 Freshman, 200 Sophomores and 50 senior students will particiâ€" pate in this year‘s effort. The students of Waterloo Uniâ€" versity College, the liberal arts college of Waterloo Lutheran Unâ€" iversity, are again going to parâ€" ticipate in the most exciting, noâ€" vel and â€" worthwhile initiation stunt in Canada. Officially namâ€" ed ‘"Shinerama," this amazing project involves the entire popuâ€" lation of the twin cities of Kitâ€" chener and Waterloo before the day is over. PAGE FOURTEEN ~ THE FIRST PAIR OF SHOES to be shined at last year‘s Shinerama belonged to Dr. Albert W. Lotz, President of the Eastern Canada Synod of the Luâ€" theran Church in America. The busy shiners are, Elli Rehse, Sue Priddle, and Stephanie Houston. 607 King St. W., Kitchener To Aidâ€"Sunbeam Home Dial SH 3â€"0281 YARDS AT SOUTHAMPTON & KINCARDINE _ SPECIAL $6.95 :# WATERLOO AVTO_BODY WATERLOO AUTO BODY Introducing Our NewiE;;t;ip Wheel Alignment, Wheel Balancing â€" 7142â€"8143 Frame Straightening Complete Collision Service When Paul Enns moved up to Senior Class as good Sophs should, Dave Robertson succeedâ€" ed him as Soph President. Dave was so impressed with the spiâ€" rit of cameradie developed by the shoe shine blitz, that he electâ€" to organize Shinerama No. 2 as the initiation stunt of 1962. Dave visited Sunbeam Home and got to know Peter Vos, his wife Joâ€" hanna, and all the staff that look after the more than 100 mentally retarded children under their care. Sunbeam Home was experâ€" iencing growing pains at that‘ time. The facilities of the origiâ€" nal home at 4 Willow Street, Wa-! terioo, the Annex. and the Wel-‘ come Home at Conestoga could‘ not accommodate the many reâ€" tarded children on the waiting list. So Peter Vos, with the help The whole idea was new and the bewildered pedestrians were not sure if everything was on the level, however, the students (unâ€" der the watchful eyes of the Sophs) worked like Trojans and claimed to have shined 5.000 pairs of shoes. Anyway, when the staff of the Imperial Bank of Commerce in Waterloo openâ€" ed the tins that night, Sunbeam Home was richer by $1358.00. The gigantic shoeâ€"shining bee is the brainâ€"child of Paul Enns, Class of ‘63. As sophomore Presâ€" ident in Fall ‘61, Paul wanted an initiation gimmick that would combine the usual Freshman haâ€" zing with a charitable project designed to capture the imaginaâ€" tion of the local residents. ‘"Shiâ€" nerama‘‘ turned out to be the iperfect answer. On initiation day the Sophomores herded the enâ€" tire Freshman class into the buâ€" siness districts and busy interâ€" sections of Kitchener and Waterâ€" Joo. Each team of three students had a complete shoe shine kit, a tin can for collections, and a brightly colored poster prociaimâ€" ing ‘"We are shining for the Sunâ€" beam Home" a home for menâ€" tally retarded children. ama are donated to the Sunbeam Home, a refuge for mentally reâ€" tarded children in Waterloo.
