The board cannot make a twoâ€" year award because of the city‘s refusal. The firemen would not benefit now if the 4Zâ€"hour week had been approved because the year will be over when the award is made. If awards were made now they wouild be in effect until a 1963 contract is negotiated and signed. This wouild then put the Fremen‘s 2â€"Year Pact Refused of course, there is a maximum accumulation of 180 working days; and no accumulated sick leave benefits on severance. The said _ accumulation _ allowance would then continue to be paid on retirement. An objection was raised about the service stripe increase from $36.50 to $60 a year and to an additional $100 for 10 years‘ serâ€" The city did agree however, to an 18 day sick leave rather than tI}e 10 day annual leave, provided The city will ask for a $100 deâ€" crease across the board if a 42 hour week is established. Mr. Harper reported that only 34 hours had been spent in fightâ€" ing fires in the city to date, and 21 hours for the whole of 1961. The firemen asked for a $400 acrossâ€"theâ€"board increase but the city offered only $38 for firstâ€" class firemen which would bring them $100 below the men on the Kitchener force.
