Blenk torf me bluntly that if 1 came to Lake St Clair next fall to shoot ducks with them that 1 would not be allowed to use my pet 20â€"gauge Both he and Lorne had stories about the odd guest that showed up with the small gauge guns and did noth ing but cripple the few short range ducks they shot at. 1 admitted that possibly the little gun was not the duck killâ€" er that the 12 gauge was, but 1 sull contended it would do almost as much if held properâ€" ly 1 pointed out that the fall beâ€" fore I had killed more ducks and geese with the twenty than I had with a twelve and with less crippling because 1 had made i mews ~L & s e dexrrtereccs Wl . a x : f 3 v\\ s . 4* * 3 4 'q;“_s;( * j ’5" lk 250 oc S 7 sotntiliomet... . 1e 5 LHI )h sure of my shots. They admittâ€" ed that I might have killed a few, but pointed out that 1 do a great deal more shooting than the average man As we slepped out of the warm Chalet into the biting west wind, 1 hoped migbtily that 1 might get a chance to show how well the 20â€"gauge would ikill. With the wind snapping at our ears, I took the boys down into the comparative quiet of a tag alder swamp. 1 knew the pheasants would be in this cover for they had no more use for the cold wind than we did. Hardly had we broken throâ€" ugh the first band of fag alder and willows than the labrador started to make game. 1 opened my mouth to warn the boys when a great long tailed cock burst out of the cover. Before he covered ten feet, another took off in the opposite direcâ€" tion 1 could see Lorne was slewâ€" ing around for the back going bird and Blenk was lining up the other. Blenk shot once and missed and as he shot another cock got up a long way out and started to leave the country. The bird Blenk was shooting ar collapsed on the second shot but the bird Lorne shot at lost a few feathers and kept going. In the meantime the long rising third bird was leaving that part of the country as fast as strong wings would take him I glanced at the other two boys. Both were standing with their guns down making no efâ€" fort to even try for the long bird. "Maybe this is my chance." l thought and pushed the ribbed barrel of the little twenty well out in front. The bird folded as though hit by a bulldozer, stone dead in the air. There was a bit of a stunned Al ) N THE WATERLOO (Ontario) CHRONICLE 1 silence for a minute and then Blenk was pounding me on the back "By gosh, 1 figured that dogâ€" gone bird was out of range of my 12â€"gauge," he said. 1 pointed out to them that I had the modified barrel on the gun and was only shooting reguâ€" lar number six shot I didn‘t bother admitting that there was probably some luck mixed up with the shot and like the nice guys they are, they didn‘t bring it up either. They went home that night with eleven hardâ€"won pheasants. It had been a tough days huntâ€" ing but at least 1 had proven one point . . . the 20â€"gauge will kill like the twelve if you hoid it in the right place at the right time. NOW THAT FOX are increasing, you fellows who favour the flat shooting rifles and scopes can have a ball all your own. Best day is one after a storm. You don‘t need to hunt heavy bush where the snow is deep for while reynard will frequent such places, he‘s usually huntâ€" ing when he does and is hard 0 catch up to. Use a pair of binoculars and use them often. Hunt the semi scrub land where if possible there are lots of large stumps. A fox loves to nap on top of a stump and his fur keeps him from getting cold no matter what the weather. Personally, we hope you have lots of luck, we don‘t like the darn fox even if they do proâ€" vide an interesting target. Remember, he is gifted with both good eyesight and a razor sharp nose.
