3OWN YO EARTH policies has won Wilfred Spooner an enâ€" viable place in the affections of Ontario sportsmen since he became Minister of Lands and Forests. Probably no other minister has ever become well known as quickly or is as well thought of. The outstanding reason is probably because he placed being a man first and a ministér later. At the official opening oï¬ the new dam at Oxford Mills, the crowds were dispersing, when unnoticed evidently by all except Mr. Spooner two young lads intercepted a turtle on its way back to the water. The urge to kill, particularly what they do not understand, ‘ies in all boys. In most cases there is little thought of cruelâ€" iy. They don‘t mean it that way but their thoughtlessness can at times cause senseless suffering. These two youngsters startâ€" ed peiting the turtle with stones when the Minister spotâ€" ted them. LISTENING TO Ward Dunâ€" brook tell about his recent trip for lake trout, we were interâ€" ested when he said they took the trout on shallow running lures and spinning tackle and yet others were catching trout with metal line at several hunâ€" dred feet, all in the same local. Ed. came very closed to takâ€" ing the biggest pickerel enter ed in Canadian fishing conâ€" tests last year and he proâ€" bably has a hankering for a repeat performance. According to all reports, fishing for pickerel, pike and lake trout is exceptionally good this year, so if Ed. can fish like he can shoot, he just might haul off and land one big enough to take up the other wall of his office. SOME VERY FINE SPECKLED trout have been coming out of Coyne Lake in the past couple of years. This lake is situated in Garibaldi Township in the Gogama district and the latest big fellow to come from its waters is a 7% lb speckle. The Elkâ€"Lakeâ€"Westree high way passes right through this township if you are interested in going the lake a try. They are strictly out for the loot which they hope the fish they catch will bring. Such Derbies are recognizâ€" ed as being unhealthy, creatâ€" ing abnormal fishing pressure and an atmosphere completely foreign to what. should exist when fishing is indulged in for sport. Such efforts are sheer slaughter of our naturâ€" al resources for the monetory gain of a few. _ _ We and some of our other Outdoor Writers have been inâ€" strumental _ in _ discouraging some of these stupid efforts and why the Department of Lands and Forests allow them to continue is pretty difficult to understand. Latest effort of multilation comes on our desk as a news release called the 1960 Travel News which 1 believe is put out under the auspices of the Department of Travel and Pubâ€" licity. In this release is an article headed, Lake Nipigon Fish Derby On For Two Days This Year. Brother, how the news of the slaughter can be spread . . . and for free. The release goes on to say that 6,000 anglers (at least they didn‘t have the colossal gaul to call them sportz3men) would vie for the $8,000 (blood money). . A man can enjoy his fishing just the same and if he is lucky enough to catch a large fish somewhere catch a large fish somew along the line, then why No undue pressure is being., exerted on the fish population, there is no reason for poot sportsmanship and no selfish influence is being shoved down the throats of many for the benefit of a few.
