PAGE TWO wWHICH WAS THE LAKGLESEL UAMERIAREAAO SQUARE RIGGER? In the year 1874 there was launched at Maitland, N.S., the "William D. Lawrence", a square rigged ship, named after her designer, builder and owner. The largest wooden ship built in Nova Scotia during the age of sail, and the largest Canadian built square rigger, her keel was 244 teet, 9 inches long, and her dimensions were 262 41.6 x 39.2 feet. She had a registered net tonnage of 2459, and her spread of canvas was 8000 square yards. She cost more than $107,000 to build, but was profitably employed in the Atlantic and Eastern trades for about eight years, where she was known as the "Great Ship". She was commanded first by a sonâ€"inâ€"law of the owner. The Bering Sea Island were (and are) the breeding place of the world‘s most valuable seal herds. Despite the fact that American authority extended only three miles from the island, the United States, in 1881, claimed authority over all Bering Sea waters, a claim which Britain protested. In 1886 and in 1889 U.S. reverue cutters seized several vessels sailing from B.C. ports. Strong protests were made by Canada and an international arbitration tribunal met in Paris in 1893. It was held that the Bering Sea was part of the high seas, and the seals were no one‘s property. However. it realized that the rapid falling off of the number of seals was a serigqus matter, and, acâ€" cordingly, restriction were placed on sealing during the summer breeding months. In 1911 another agreement beâ€" iween Britain, the U.S. and Japan further restricted the area of pelagic sealing, but awarded Canada a petâ€" centage of all the revenue from the annual hunt. During the breeding season the old male seals stay with the pups on shore, the young "bachelor" males nerd anart and only the females swim out for food. Thus use OS" T T0 L.
