We did manâ€" age to get in a little fishing but were glad when the truck showed up again to return us to Shoo Fly. I have only fished Sandâ€" plane twice before Each time, the wind would howl down the lake@_to the extent that throwing a fly was absolutely ‘mpossible. There had been no wind when we left camp, but by the time we had driven the truck around the lake and arâ€" rived at Sandplane, it was startng to gust up out of the northeast, not a good wind for fishing at any time. The next morning was Satâ€" urday and as neither Dyke or Harold had ever seen Sandâ€" plane Lake, I suggested we set Clem Hoff, the camp boss, to put a couple of boats on it and we would give it a try. Outside of a couple of smalâ€" ler fish, it was the best we could do that first day, but at least it was a start. For the size of him, that speckle had a lot of resistance and took a considerable beating before we were able to slide the net around him. Donny also manaâ€" ged a nice fish, not too much smaller than the one I took. _ However, we got on the train. All of us ';lérâ€"e."fil;ed with expectation and they say it is greater than realization anyâ€" way. Truth was that we were all so tired that at the time. we couldn‘t have been less concerned with catching fish. All we wanted to do was find a bed and crawl into it. While the train was on time getting away, it managed through some devious means or another to lose about four hours going up to Shooâ€"Fly. The result was that we didn‘t get out fishing until late on in the afternoon. 2C We had Donny one of the boys at the camp, guiding Harold, so he would be free to swing the camera if the occasion arose. He was naturally tickled that he had a good legitimate excuse to get away from his camp chores and we were glad to have him along. mmovlfl&owhstweek._bykem. fishing and hunting friend of long standing and Harold Mantay, director turned camera man and yours truly, left for Shooâ€"Fly lake. While we have all sorts of faith in the abitity of Shooâ€" Â¥Fly to produce large speckles at any time of year, June is not our favorite month by a long way. Then too, there was the camera man and to take a camera on a specific fishing trip Ts almost one sure way of not catching any fish. Of by Herb Smith Canads WATERLOO We finally ended up as 1 always do on Shooâ€"Fly, at the Glory Hole. The very first cast, a speckle slammed into the fly with enough force to nearly tear the rod out of my hand. After his first wild run, he allowed me to regain about ten feet of line, but that was all. Then he sat out "at the end of about thirty yards of line and tried to shake the hook loose. That kind of nonâ€" sence is hard on the nerves, so We were later than usual getting out that day but clickâ€" ed with the fish right away. There seemed to be trout unâ€" der every log, of which there are thousands in Shooâ€"Fly. We had a ball for a while although the fish were runâ€" ning smaller than usual. A good sign in a lake that has been producing nothing but large fish for so long. _1 _ WALL TILE FLOOR TILE s 4. NIMMO led for exterior THE WATERLOO (Ontario) CHRONICLE OPTOMETRIST It was to be the beginning of some of the wildest trout fishing I have ever seen anyâ€" where. Dyke said he figured that he averaged a trout every second cast for several hours. At times we both had a fish on at the same time. We kept one large one and returned the rest/to the water, conâ€" Hardly had we arrived than the storm was over. We bailed out the boats and started out again. We had just got about half way up the lake when an old dammer of a storm burst out all over the place. Lightning ran across the sky, thunder rolled and rain fell so heavily it raised bubbles on the lake surface. We turned tail and headed back for the boat house. had our rain gear and then left for the lake. Every day we had been seeâ€" ing a lot of partridge and other wildlife but Sunday everything seemed to be out on the road. Even a black ‘bear, the largest I have ever seen, came down and stood on the dock. He stared at us and we Started back. Neither party seemed to have too much asâ€" surance, but it was the bear that left first. Sunday dawned warm and heavily overcast. We all doubâ€" le checked to make sure we Now with a couple of good fish on ice, we could relax and work a little harder at guiding the others. I tightened up on him again and he obliged by tearing off most of the line I had got back on the reel. By this time, Donny and Harold were on the job and I could bhear the camera runâ€" ning. Trouble was, 1 now had two boats which the trout could get under and he was certainly trying for both. The Whiporwills were holâ€" lering from every point of the compasse when the net finally closed over the big fellow, He was better than five pounds . . . a lot of speckle.
