The thought now is that by careful paring, it may be possâ€" ible to stay within the governâ€" ... . ment agzant, but the Bridgeâ€" port road would be one of those sacrificed. It was pointed out that if necessary savings could be made, the Bridgeport road could be constructed next year and still possible, staying with the alloted government â€" aâ€" mount. ~ A road upkeep subsidy of $162,000 is provided by the provincial government. â€" The city expects to exceed the subâ€" sidy by $77,676 this year and the government will not kick in with more money. GEPORT road may cost up» ward of $100,000 dollars al+> though present estimates set its cost at $60,000. Waterloo council would if possible, like to see this job held over until next year. Apâ€" proval has been given for this construction in 1955. Although the contest was limited to persons living in Waterioo county, entries came from as far away as Manitoba and India. The slogan which finally won the one hundred doliars was Progress with Stability. A number of other entries were similar, but the judges decided Mr. Babey‘s wording was what they were looking for. The hundreds of slogans sent in from all over the county made it difficult for the judges to come to a final decision. They did so only afâ€" ter a great deal of time had been spent studying the many entries. Stephen Babey, winner of theâ€"first week‘s slogan contest has now been declared the Grand prize winner and will be awarded $100 cash. Babey lives at 161 Belmount Bivd., Waterloo. Waterloo Council Monâ€" day night hired William Al. :+ 21, for the assess me . iment at a startâ€" ing sa.1y of $2,240 per annum. He came to Waterloo in June 20, 1913 and has made his home here ever since. He is considered by many people to be one of the best boosters of the city. Mr. Stephen Babey, 58, of 161 Belmount Boulevard, Waâ€" terloo, is the winner of the cities slogan contest. Alderman Arno Hauck felt that the citizens of Waterloo should be commended for the promptness in which they are paying their taxes. He also pointed out that since he has been seated in the Mr. Don Shaeffer city treaâ€" surer indicated that every ofâ€" fort is being made to maintain this record, and collections to date indicate a continuation of the high percentage of colâ€" lections as enjoyed during the past years. The City of Waterloo‘s tax arrears per capita is listed at $2.11. This amount is the fourth lowest of the provinâ€" cial cities. Oshawa was the only munâ€" icipality with a higher perâ€" centage. The 1954 collection is reâ€" corded at 97.177%. istiecs which wv prepared by the Department! of Municipal affairs the city of Waterioo again ranks second out of twentyâ€"nine Ontario cities for the collection of current taxes. This has been the third time in three years that Waterloo has maintained this position. Council‘s office committee turned down a request that Kâ€"W Branch of the National House Builders Association asking the city to place advertisements declaring National Home Week from Septémber 10 to 18. Alderman Anna Hughes preâ€" dicted it will b& "eat a carrot week next‘". A great deai of thought was put behind his winning slogan he linked the stability of Caâ€" nada as a country and the progressiveness of the city of Wateorioo. Further evigence will be heard in the next session of court. In Waterloo Court on Monâ€" day Deputy Magistrate Alan D. Barron heard evidence of a Waterioo police officer beâ€" ing assaulted. L. Wiliam KJopp, of 52 Erb Street West, told court he was "flabergasted" when the officer grabbed him and handcuffed him to his car. Constable Schneider testiâ€" fied Kloop lunged out at him with both arms when Kiopp tried to get his licence from the officer. Klopp said he was "importâ€" ant around Waterloo". Evidâ€" ence showed the incident ocâ€" curred after midnight July 6th when Kilopp and a woman friend approached King and Erb Streets. Man Assaults Wat. Policeman city eouncit he cannot rememâ€" ber. any tax sale being held in Waterloo. He felt council should comâ€" ply to the builders association request as an encouragement continuance of the city‘s high percentage of home owners. Alderman Fred Dreger of Kitchener said the 660 homes built in Kitchener last year represents a lot of employâ€" ment and business for the city. Kitchener Council, however authorized the mayor to issue@ a joint declaration with the City of Waterloo declaring obâ€" servance of National Home Week from September 10 to 18. Council members felt that a further report should be made by the board of works committee, city treasurer and the engineering â€" department to find any projects planned for 1955 that could be helé over unti 1956. When asked if the city would have any major underâ€" takings in 1956 Mr. Dutton told council that the largest project would be the paving of new subdivisions. D‘Arcy â€" Dutton _ assistant city engineer felt that if "the Bridgeport road project were to be held it is possible we would not go over the $162,â€" 000. He added that during the winter _ months snow _ and slush will be found on the street a lot of people will be getting "shower baths" from passing traffic. Alderman Hauck feels that it would be "unfortunate ‘f they do turn it down for the road in its present condition is unservicible." Alderman Arno Hauck has been after council to "firx up" this road for the last nine months and if the recommendâ€" ation made by Alderman Anna Hughes which suggests that the project be held back until next year is put througeh h will not see the road laid unâ€" til 1956. This project is set at an estimated cost of $60,000. "We +should wherever we can cut the garment to fit the coffin," stated the aiderman. "It appears logical that conâ€" sideration be given to the postponing of certain works until the early part of 1956 in order that full advantage may be taken of the subsidy provided the Department of Highways," Mr. Schaefer said. Alderman Leo Whitney faâ€" voured this suggestion made by Mr. Schaefer since the city will not receive subsides for anything spent ,over the $162,â€" 000 figure. \ Certain projects are being witheld until such time as Ontario Municipal board apâ€" proval is obtained Mr. Schae fer said. During this year Waterloo has compieted, or is propesâ€" ing to undertake works that will reach a $237,876 figure. This is the corporation share. D. C. Schaefer, city treaâ€" surer pointed this out to Waâ€" terloo council Monday night. Waterloo will exceed the subsidy for approved works projects on maintenance of roads, streets, bridges and culverts for 1955 by $75,676. The departments figure reâ€" presents â€" corporation â€" share only on any works undertaker in 1955. subsidy received from NO. 32
