Th their bank account or women who have required hospitalization, not to mention relatives and friends, . are that hospitals have kept their costs as low as they have. And think this over: while the per diem cost of hospital care is up, the total cost for many hospiteal illnesses is often less today than it was a generation There are a number of reaâ€" sons why the per diem cost of. hospital care is higher today. For one thing diagnostic tests nowadays are more extensive, more exacting and more a¢â€" curate. The average hospital stay this year will be less than for a similar disease or comparsâ€" tive injury some years ago. This means more patient turnâ€" over for a g-ive!;n.nnmber of beds. It means, top, that since most hospital pzedurel are 1concentnted during the first few days of stay, our hospiâ€" tals now have fewer convalâ€" ‘eseing patients walking about and attending to many of their own needs. With a higher perâ€" centage of patients in the acute stages of illness, the average cost of daily care is bound to be higher. Because of these factors hospital staffs have had to be considerably increased. There was a time, not too long ago, when hospitals seldom needed as many paid members of staff as patients. An efficient, wellâ€" equipped hospital now has two and frequently more employâ€" ;;sâ€" 1:;er -pntiet;t. not including the visiting medical staff. In bygone years, working hours in hospitals were notorâ€" iously long. In tune with the times, this condition has been radically changed. Bué nunlike most ifdustM®, you? toMMMurtâ€" ity hospital cannot operate on a five day week. Instead it operates seven days a week â€" 168 hours â€" including holidays. This means that its staff, werking in three shifts, must be ready for any emerâ€" gency that might arise, day or night. _ This _ "readinessâ€"toâ€" serve" costs money. _ As a result, of every dollar spent on hospital maintenance, from 69% to 65% and often as much as 70% is now paid in salaries aÂ¥d wagés. At the same time, hospitals now have to pay more for equipment, more for food, and more for services and supplies than ever before. ‘These are some of the major reasons why the "paâ€" tient day" hospital costs are high. But, from my long asâ€" sociation with hospitals, I am convinced that were it not for the good organization, the careful purchasing, the effiâ€" cient practice of economy, and the willingness of hospital emâ€" ployees to do more than they have to, our daily hospital rates would be considerably higher than they are. Some of the delicsite 0 Because of the better results ‘ obtained toâ€"day, the average patient‘s stay in hospital is much shorter, and his convalâ€" escence and return to producâ€" tivity greatly accelerated; this offsets the increased per diem cost. At the same time the average patient‘s income has also greatly increased . over the years, so that the average hospital bill should be easier to meet toâ€"day than a generaâ€" tion â€"ago. And prepayment hosnital â€" insurance â€" makes | it still easier. All things considered, resiâ€" dents of Ontario might well ask "How can hospitals give such service and treatment for «o little?"
