FLAVOI INCREASES DEMAND An improvement in the "vor of Ontario turnips due to the elimination of such diseases as Black Leg and Water-Core, cou- pied with a more attractive Ip- pearance, has paid off in an in- creased demand on the domestic market. This information was re- ported at a recent meeting of the Turnip Committee, Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Amin- tion. In addition to the election of ofticers, the committee also dis- cussed ways of improving the quality and broadening the de- mand for Ontario turnips. -. . The disease known as Black Leg which threatened the turnip industry in the late thirties and early forties, has been almoct completely eliminated in the past decade ,thanks to the work of ag- ricultural scientists. Seed treat- ment has proven to be the most effective remedy. Now all regis-l, tered seed is treated, but, Just IS a precaution, many growers treat their own turnip seed before it is put into the ground. An occasion- al crop is still found to be infect- ed with this disease, but such cases are usually due to infected soil and a build up of disease or- ganisms over the years, rather than infected seed. . Likewise, water-core, serious turnip malady, Is now well under control. Growers have learned that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". William Philip of Galt has returned after ao years of service on the Grand) River Conservation Commiaaion. For " years, he acted as chair- man, until his health made it ne- cessary for him to resign that post a year ago. He continued as a commissioner from Gall for an- othey year .. -- a. ..p "Nowadays", says Mr. Philip "the people of Ontario are asking for more leadership in conserva- tion: in those days, " year: or more ago. we hnd to get behind them and push them along to mtylre {my prunes tt all." . . He knows what he is talking about. Thirty years ago. there was no Conservation Authorities Act, or any other watershed con- servation legislation in Ontario. When the Grand River Conserva- CONSEIVA'I'ION PIONEER Mr. Philip became interested because he was a bank manager in Galt. That city had seriousi Bood losses every few years. So did Brantford, Paris and some, other towns. The Grand River Valley Boards of Trade. headed by Gordon. Cockshutt of Brant- ‘lord, began to seek a solution 'about 30 years ago and attracted a group of conservationists from along the river. They met with “apathy in the government and lsome active opposition from the "ownships. A survey by govern- ‘ment engineers about 1932 showed _ how serious the problem had hen ‘come and suggested the building of large dams " the most emeient rem y. When the Ontario Gov- 'ernment became interested and (passed legislation to formal Com- mission, Mr. Cockshutt and the Boards of Trade dropped out, and William Philig became the Brst chairman of t e G.R.C.C, He had known the river all his life. His father had an interest in the industries at the Elora Fall; 90 years ago, William Philip was born in Fergus and grew up near the river. It was in Fergus that he Joined the Imperial Banff staff.
