This stretch of road has a good Macadam surface until it reaches the Quebec boundary. At this point it deteriorates into a rough washboard gravel stretch for the remainder of the distance into the Quebec mining centre. We do not claim to fall into the category of an authori!{ but rather try to bring to the atâ€" tention of our readers the picture as we see it from time to time. Drove 2,500 Miles During the last two weeks we have driven over more than 2,500 miles of road in Northern and Western Ontario, Northâ€"west Queâ€" bec, and an additional 700 in Norâ€" thern Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, and feel in a position to give fair appraisal of the highâ€" ways covered, and to make a comâ€" parison to those enjoyed by our American cousins. # TOOK 2,500â€"MILE TRIP Much has been said and written recently on the subject of Canaâ€" dian highways, some by people who know what they are talking about. The quality of the Canaâ€" dian highway which we left beâ€" hind us at the international bouiâ€" dary at Pigeon River was someâ€" thing less than indifferent howâ€" ever, as we gradually picked up speed on the American express highway. This is only to be exâ€" pected, for it is unreasonable to expect comparable works projects in Canada when one is making a comparison betwen a country with the assets of 150,000,000 poâ€" pulation and our own 13,000,000. The one greatest and most conâ€" sistent "beef" which we have to make in regard to motoring in Canada were the approaches to medium sized towns and cities. These, almost without exception, were boneâ€"rattling, springâ€"breakâ€" ing streets leading into the highâ€" ways. One does not have to jourâ€" ney very far afield however, to encounter these conditions as the traffic arteries leading to highâ€" wa?rs in Kitchener, Stratford, Galt, Preston are just a few fine examples of the punishing, brokâ€" enâ€"surfaced streets to whicit we refer. From time to time you hear of a certain type of driâ€" ver being fined for not lowering be driven comfortably at speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour. This road passes through some of the wildest and unspoiled country accessible to motorists and the section described has only three gasoline outlets between the two towns mentioned. In years to come this area will offer a veri-‘ table Mecca to sportsmen and tourists alike when its full possiâ€" bilities become more . widely known. Even the gravél roads through this section offer an excellent driving surface. Big Strides Made In summing up this personal and unbiased report of motoring conditions encountered on our reâ€" cent trip, we can only be enthusiâ€" astic about what we observed. The tremendous strides being made in road cons&ction in this province at the present time wil someday be recognized as a monument to the initiative of our Deg:nment of Highways, and the autiful highways now under development to span our great northland can do nothing but bring greater prosperity to the people of Norâ€" thern Ontario as well as the proâ€" vince as a whole.
