CHRONICLE CAMERA RECORDS OTHER LINWOOD BANK HOLDUP SCENES Police Planning, Fast Cars Speed Capture of 2 Bandits By Staff Writer LINWOOD. â€" The screaming wheels of an Ontario Provincial Police cruiser were the first intiâ€" mation that anything was amiss to break the tranquility of Waâ€" terloo County early Monday afâ€" ternoon. Waiting for a stoplight at the intersection of King and Queen Streets in Kitchener, a Chronicle reporter saw the cruiser make the bend at a high rate of speed and immediately gave chase. Following the cruiser through Baden, Wellesley, Crosshill, and eventually arriving in Linwood it was learned that an armed pair, later identified as Floyd Klink and Philip Reardon, had robbed the Bank of Nova Scotia branch of nearly $3,000.00. The pair were seen in town for nearly an hour before the holdup which took place at approximateâ€" ly 1.40 p.m. They entered the Bell Telephone office between 12 and 1 o‘clock and asked Miss Ethel Ogram, operator, directions to RR. 1, St Clements, after giving the address of one Anthony Bush, Jr., which they apparently selected at ranâ€" dom from the directory Upon entering the bank one of the bandits presented a cheque to the teller, Barclay Bond, 19. He asked for identification and when he looked up was greeted by the muzzle of a revolver which he described as being "{wice as big" as the bank‘s gun Manager Eric Warneford, who was putting in his last day at the bank before being transferred was cuffed by a gun in the hand of one of the bandits. He was ordered to open the vault after the cash was removed from the teller‘s wicket. He then told the men that it was impossible for him to do so, and at this point the staff of the bank were ordered to step into the vault and stay there for three minutes The robbers could not lock the vault door. In the bank at the time of the robâ€" bery was Charles Brash, the new manager, who was also herded into the vault with the teller and Friday, May 18, 1961 FORCED INTO VAULT â€" Eric Warneford, manager of the bank, who was scheduled to leave Monday for a post near Ottawa, is seated at left. Standing is Barclay Bond, 19, Arnprior, teller at the bank. At right is Mr. Warneford‘s succesâ€" sor, Charles Brash. The three were bundled into the vault by the two armed men. Mr. Brash‘s comments were that this wasa "fine way to start at a new bank." TELLER‘S CAGEâ€"Mr. Bond illustrates how he was working in the teller‘s cage just before the holdup actually took place. A Linwood district man came in shortly after the robbery, unaware that the bank had been robbed, was told that he could not have his check cashed Seen Before Holdup Last Day at Bank past manager. His comment on the afternoon‘s proceedings was, "This is a fine reception". In their haste, the bandits, one of whom was described as being exceedingly nervous, overlooked about $100.00 in the teller‘s drawâ€" er which had been covered with papers and also artother $60.00 in cash belonging to the manager which was in his desk. It was learned that the men had been taken prisoner about oneâ€"half hour after the robbery when their car hit a hydro pole near the intersection of highways 86 and 7, about four miles from Guelph on the Guelphâ€"Kitchener highway. In trying to photograph the scene of the crime and also assiâ€" mulate the facts of the case the Chronicle reporter listened in to the progress of the case on a poâ€" lice cruiser shortâ€"wave radio. One of the men then took to the fields while the other tried to escape by hiding in a nearby headge dividing two fields. The money from the holdup had been blown over a wide area after the erash Proceeding toward Gueliph on highway 86 the pair were spotted by Cpl. Philip Seibert in the viâ€" cinity of Ariss. The men, drivâ€" ing a 1950 maroon Dodge sedan, picked up speed when they saw the ctuiser and the chase conâ€" tinued at speeds in excess of 80â€" milesâ€"anâ€"hour until they careened through the intersection onto a narrow sideroad and collided with the hydroâ€"pole.
