Anne takes the name of Anna Brent but Mrs. Hoag, whom the servants address as Madame, calls hor FiA. A flery redâ€"head, Madame revels in tempestuous scenes. Berta, a maid, is unwarrantedly jealous of Anne be cause of Carl Case, the handsome young chauffeur. Anne likes Carl but avoids him because of Borta, Then Aune and Carl unexpectedly, meet and the misunderstanding is cleared up and Aune is very happy. Mrs. Beasley locates Anne, and although Anne swears her to secrecy, Maida Suydam, Anne‘s cousin, demands that Anne leave Bois Joli with her. Madame orders her out. Craig Braâ€" don waylays Aunne, says he will drive her to Bois Joli but speeds towards Jacksonville, saying they will be married. Anne thwarts him by hail wiped out in the crash, her mother dead and her father, a New York banker, a suicide, cannot bring herâ€" self to marry wealthy, young, blase Craig Braden. She keeps holding off his proposal, the last time at the ing passing motorists. While Maâ€" dame is in Miami, her pearle are missed at Bois Joli and Anne is de tained by the police until they mysâ€" teriously reappear. ï¬ho‘l convinced Carl has failed her? he does not come to her. She goes to Maida to confess failure. Maida sends her away. Madame trusts Anne and takes her back as secretaryâ€"comâ€" panion. Maida gets Anne to ask Maâ€" dame to help her husband Jock whose entire fortune is threatened. Madame says she will have Hoag give Jock a job after the "crash". Instalment 36. "I‘ve been rapping here for five minutes at least," Bats said. "I‘ve been worried. Her who brought up your lunch brought it back again. She said there was no answer, that you must be out. I was sure you didn‘t go out." "Mayhe so," Bats said, eyeing Anne with «disapproving nod. ‘If you been restig it don‘t seem to have done you good. You look like a spook. You ought to take something en your stomach, say an egg milk shake with a nip o‘ brandy in it." Anne closed the door behind (Bats "I feltâ€"all in," she said tonelessly "I‘ve been resting." Anne raised icy hands to a burnâ€" ing brow. "I‘ll teke it, Bats, if.you think I should." Easier to acceed than to arâ€" gue. She was through with arguâ€" mentâ€"through with putting up. reâ€" sistance. Sheâ€" was utterly inadeâ€" quate, utterly futile, utterlyâ€"lost. What was the use? When fate, when life turned is face against youâ€"you wereâ€"lost. Anne spent the night on the balâ€" cony outside her room. ‘There was a wicker reclining chair, which might have been comfortable if there had been comfort in her. She looked at stars without seeing them. Listened to the song of the surf without hearâ€" ing it. She was in a coma. The coma of defeat. She had her work. Yes, there was that. But why work in an empty world? Why ‘struggle when there‘s no place to reach? Once she had thought honest work, the indeâ€" pendence of earning, would hbe enough. That was before she saw the challenge of love in eyes bluer than the skiesâ€"before dear lips swept her cheekâ€" She rose, like a sleepâ€"walker and turned on the bath. The sun was up. already riding high. At any moment Madame would summon her to the round boudoir. A hot bath, a cold shower. After all, human streams are made up of red blood, not of ice water. Take up your. pack and carry on. Anne reported to the round bouâ€" doir. pale but not pallid. There was was a new sharp angle to her chin. Madame was in fine fettle. "The rest done you good,. Fifi," she said, satisfied by a first quick survey. "It done me good, too. It was like old times for papa and me. We put oldâ€" time sougs on the phonographâ€"why we even danced a polka." "It must have been fun." Anne found she could smile. She wished she could have seen the little knob of a man and Madame the Amazon dancing. "Why do I gallivant, Fif", Madame demanded. "when I got papa® Paâ€" pa‘s fixed up a new rose in his garâ€" den. He‘s put a couple of stalks toâ€" gether and he‘s got a new one. He put the first one from the bush on the table last hight for supper. It‘s pink. but it has a kind of a red heart He calls it the Madâ€"am. For me. And 1 should let phoney counts and barons kiss my hand!" "I shouldn‘t hbother," thinkin« aloud. "You wouldn‘t what?" Anne came back. Anne said "I mean to sayâ€"â€"it must be a thrill baving your husband name aâ€" rose after youâ€"when he loves his roses so much." _‘ "You‘re right. both times." Maâ€" dame fluffed out her pink hair. "I‘m a fool to ‘bether about barons that‘s none of my business. It. makes me feel like sl{teen again to have papa grow me his own special rose. And FW, if . the Phoenix Agency:â€" calls, tell ‘em we got a showfur. .The one Case sent:turnéd up." That ‘afternoon Anne had some shopping to do. The new chauffeur drove her. He was not yet in uniâ€" form. He was of medium height, stocky and gave‘ the impression that clothes restrained his action. A terse fellow. Anne noticed that while he handled the car with celerity and perfect ease, he made only a preâ€" tense of standing at attention or of any service except that of actual driving. She thought of Carl, tall, slimâ€"waisted, in the blue uniform. Fitting the new chauffeur into iCarl‘s badge of service. would be like tryâ€" ing to ihrust a size4â€"C‘foot into a Gâ€"AA shoe. "Yes ma‘am." Tardily, Clearly re membered to touch his hat. Anne told herself, "Not that it matters. I can‘t quite go on pursuâ€" ing a chauffeur up hill and down dale, can 1?" Nothing to be learned from that source. And what was it she wanted to lear? The whereabouts of a lost dream? Hould she ever learn to put dreame behind her? To smash through life snatching at opportuni, ty at things that glitter, a colors in rainbows? (Copyright 1935, by Jane Dixon) (To be Continued) Perhaps the new man was a friend of Carl. He might know where Carl had gone. Nevertheless she leaned forward and said, "I didn‘t get your name." ‘Cleary", the man said. "Câ€"lâ€"eâ€"aâ€"râ€"y". ‘‘Thanks." _ Anne subsided into her seat. Cleary was not only terse. He was very terse. ‘There had been a large period at the end of the "y". _ Whe she loft the car Anne said, "I won‘t be long. You‘ll wait?" She felt almost apologetic.
