Arnold, chairman of the Elmira Public School Board, stated that children had come to the Elmira Public School from Woolwich townâ€" ship for 60 years. The distance the townehip children have to travel to the Balsam Grove School or to the Elmira School was practically the saume. He stressed the point that the Elmira school was bétter equipped and he couldn‘t understand why the farmers did not see the better adâ€" vantage the children have here. Farmers in the Woolwich area are | desirous of changing the school dis trict or in other words hï¬lul eending their children to the Eimira Union schooi and send them to the Balsam Grove echool, claiming the wdistence for the children to the latâ€" ter school was shorter. The princt ple reason is that they would pay about a third leas school tax. A meetâ€" ing was held on Wednesday night, when the Elmira PubMe School Board, the Woolwich _ township School board and interested rateâ€" payers of Woolwich township were gathered to discuss the matter. Mayâ€" or G. Dilion presided. Mr. R. H. Roâ€" berts of Kitchener, Public School: Inspector, was also pn‘_elt. â€" WOOLWICH FARMERS WANT SCHOOL _ AREA CHANGED Claim It Costs Less To Send Chilâ€" dren to Balsam Grove School Than to Elmira. On Sunday evening, Rev. M. H. Sewel, B.D., delivered his farewell sermon in Gale Preebyterian Church. Rev. Mr. Sewell‘s action, in resignâ€" ing is entirely voluntary in order to save the congregation financial emâ€" barrasement. Rev. Mr. Sewell has no other place in view. Parents Banquetted. A member of the Woolwich School Board pointed out, that taking it in a five year average a certain resi dent of Woolwich township could have paid about a third leas school tax if he had paid it to the Woolâ€" wich township council rather than to the Elmira council. This difference, he stated, was about $7.17. He also wondered why things were not arâ€" ranged long ago so that the farmâ€" ers of that townahip could pay their school taxes to the township council rather than to the town souncil and thus save money. Inspector _ Roberts advised the gathering that it was up to the rateâ€" payer‘s wish not the distance to deâ€" termine to which school the chil dren are to be sent. The law, he stated, is if a Woolwich township resident preferred to send his chilâ€" dren to Balsam Grove school he could do so provided he sent a writâ€" ten letter to the School Inspector askâ€" ing permiseion. Should the Inspector advise him in a return letter that there was sufficient room in the Balsam Grove School for his chil dren and grant him permission to send them there, the Woolwich resiâ€" dent was privileged to do «o. He then could demand a rebaté in taxes from the Elmira council at the end of the year, but would have to, of course, pay his share of school taxes to the townahip council. The Wool wich townehip council and the Elmira board will each name an arbitrator to weet the School Inspector and arâ€" rive at a decision, Farewell Sermon. An appropriate event took place on Thursday evening in the base ment of the Wesley United Church, when the C.G.LT. banquetted their parents. A special program was preâ€" pared for the occasion.
