TO EXPECTANT MOTHERS Letter from Mrs. Ayars Tells How Lydia E. Pinkham‘s Vegetable Compound Helped Her two partners at their goldâ€"mining camp, Harry Gloster flees .out.h-‘ ward knowing that be will be ac~ cused of the crime. On the way Gloster saves the life of a stranger, Lee Haines, from the murderous bands of a scoundrel by the name of Joe Macarthur. "Joan" lives with an old recluse, Buck â€" Daniels, presumably â€" her father, in a ranch house. One nigh. she slips away and rides to a schoolâ€" house several miles distant, where a dance is in progress. On the way home she carries on a romantic conâ€" versation in the shadowy thickets with the outlawed Harry Gloster and then rides away at a gallop beâ€" fore Gloster can approach her. Glos ter goes to the schoolhouse, tags the prettiest girl on the floor, and begins to dance. "Nobody was tagâ€" ging you," he says wonderingly to his partner. And at this, finally, she looked up. They were great brown eyes, indeed. and filled with an almost too perfect meekness. "Can you help it?" she asked. "Say the word and I‘ll show you the trick." Some of the meekness left her eyes and a glimmer of mischief took its place. "If you canâ€"" she said. It was done with miraculous skill A slight increase in their speedâ€" they whirled to}xards one prospecâ€" tive and eagerâ€"faced tagger, then away from his reaching fingertipsâ€" then towards the other, and away ‘again, like a leaf which currents throw up and down, suddenly, but nevery with jar or jerk. ~ "How in the world did you do it she was laughing up at him. He drank in that laughter, frankly meeting her eves as he had never met the eyes of any woman before What did it matter? She was only a ghost. The reality was far away fleeing through the haze of moonâ€" shine. "You‘re going to forget Johnâ€"for this one dance," he commanded. ‘"You‘re ehgaged to ime, understand â€"for five minutes!" "What do you mean?" gasped Nell "You know what I mean." He dodged an aggressive tagger and then sped on. "If John doesn‘t get me;" she was saying, "on this round, he‘ll be furious." "You‘re not like other people," she said almost wistfully. "Not a bit, Here‘s John again‘! Dance faster. Longer steps! We‘re going to dodge him if you helpâ€"" And help she did. She became as light as that whirling leaf he had thought of before. It seemed that his mere volition was guiding her. "The devil!" muttered Harry Glosâ€" ter. "Someone tagged me then. But we‘re going onâ€"" "Oh, there‘M be trouble about, it It‘s the rule!" "[Yyou care about rules?" "Not the least in the world!" She had â€"caught the fire at last. A rioting carelessness was in her eyes. "There‘s another hand at my shoulder!" They had swerved deftly away, but John had apparently been watchâ€" ing the previous tactics of this big stranger, and his hand touched Glosâ€" ter. But Gloster danced on, with the girl in his arms. "What will happen? What will they do?" the girl was breathing close to his face. "That‘s for them to worry about. This dance is ours!" He drew her a little closer. __"I feel your heart keeping timeâ€" with the music," he whispered. Before them swimming!" was the moonlight world. There was no lack of brains beâ€" hind the level black brows of John Gainor. His temper was as é@ger and as sanguinary as that of any man, but he was possessed of & controlling discretion. When, after having tagged Gloster, he saw the big man dance serenely on, his first impulse ’is to jump at his throat and tear bhim away, But the very size of Harry Gloster was enough to make Gainor doubly thoughtful. So, instead of acting on the flnt! rash impulse, he stepped back to consider the situation again. Had it been the first time that Nell had stepped from the conventional path. passion might bave carried him away, but he had watched her flirtâ€" ing a dozen times, and this was simply the old story retold, he deâ€" cided. It would not do to make himâ€" self ridiculous before the crowd. Again, he was by no means sure how far he could go with Nell. Whother she was in love with him or with his father‘s ranch he had never been quite able to make up his mind. On occasion he presumed on the rights of being her fiance, but those occasions were few and far between. So far, so good. But if he temptâ€" ed her again, might she not fling away from him and wreck all his hopes with a single fiery sentence? He knew her well enough to feel the danger. And this, plus the physical dimensions of Harry Gloster, made him pause to consider. In another moment he was glad that he had delayed, for Gloster was tagged oy half a dozen other men, and yet still went serenely on and showed not the slightest intention of abandoning his partner. It was not Gainor alone who had been inâ€" sulted, but a whole group of men, and every one was on fire with rage. Moreover, they were not fellows to lie down under such an insult. In fact, they were such men that he could not imagine what had let Nell permit her partner to offend them. Something â€" most â€" extraordinary maust have happened to sweep Nell off her feet in such Tashion. Nel! was transformed and radiant in the arms of this big man. She leaned back in them and looked up to hi with laughter on her lips. But Gainor took no hasty steps. It was not until he saw the couple swing off the uin floor at the end of the hall ind uisappear through the door that he began to act on the offensive.
