_~. Insists That the Wil of the & Conservative Convention In a fighting speech before the big Conservative conference held at Toronto on Wednesday, Nov. 19th, Premier Ferguson left no doubt as to his intention to resist all efforts, within or without his own party, to thwart the will of the people as exâ€" pressed in the O. T. A. plebiscite on Oct. 23 last. ° He declared for the principle Of adherence to the will of the people, and his last sentence, aâ€"clearâ€"and emphatic declaration of his course, brought the whole conclave to his feet, cheering him. He said, as a finale to his address: "I want to say to you that there is uo office in the gift of the people, not even the Prime Ministership of the Province of Ontario, great posâ€" ition as it is, that has sufficient atraction for me to cause me fo violate an obligation given to the people." â€" The "wet" issue was precipitated when a resolution, tabled by F. W. Wilson, M.P.P., Windsor, and W. G. Weichel, M.P.P., for North Waterâ€" lo0, as mover and seconder, was inâ€" troduced. It read as follows: ‘"We, supporiers of the Conservative Party in the Province of Ontario, resolve and declare that in our opinion the results of the recent plebiscite, held Oct. 23, 1924, constitute a mandate from the people to the Legislature of this Province to pass legislation providing for Government Control in those ridings that desire it, and that such legislation is necessary in the best interests of law and order." Aftér the resolution was read there was the hottest kind of disâ€" cussion. The resolution itself never came to a vote, the whole row being over the motion of Mr. McCausland that the resolution be presented to the meeting for discussion. , The ultimate standing vote upon the question of whether the resoluâ€" tion should be considered by the convention found only ~ three sSupâ€" porters, among them Mr. McCausâ€" land and a remarkable feature of the vote was that not even F. W. Wilgon, M.P.P., or W. G. Weichel, M.P.P., the mover and seconder, were to be found standing in favor amendment, the whole room, with the exception of the three propon ents, stood up, and celebrated its victory amid a burst of cheering. of Hon. Mr. Ferguson in his final adâ€" dress said: "All I am asking of the Conservative party today is that they manifest some degree of conâ€" fidence in this government. We are just as vitally interested in this problem as Mr. McCausland or any other elector in this province, and, without saying anything disparag ingly, I think I have just as good a grasp of public sentiment on this question. "The duty of the government is not to legislate for® southwest Torâ€" onto, or Windsor, or Waterloo, or any other riding. The duty of the government is to legislate for the whote *province. "I want to say to you that when this meeting decides to have a conâ€" vention to select a leader, it will find I am not subm tine my nvue to i:, because I have no cesirs ef aubb tion to ioâ€"ve as l sdler of the Conâ€" servative puily. I ana thove only i cause you think I can do you some service, and wnen tvuu ihink someâ€" body else con serve this party better â€"be ascured of this. that 10 owill cheerful;, and with some sease of relief, hand the sceptre over to my successor, and do my utmost to he‘n him in the burden he bas to carry. The O. T. A. is there by popular vote. I say no selfâ€"respecting governâ€" ment could pursue any other course than to say to the people: "What do you want with respect to this legislation ?" The peculiar way old Mother Earth takes her course through inâ€" finite space seems to clip a slice of daylight off both ends of each of these shortening November day»J and the candle has to be lit and the backJog replenished a Jittle earlier every evening. Iceâ€"cream days on the piazza, rambles in the woodâ€"lot, the long, long furrow down the braeâ€" side, alinging fertilizer for the land‘s sake, and hanling produce of the "backâ€"fifty" are now only a hearth stone dream, but the daily round of chores and proparing three repasts a day are ever with ug.
