Reports of various commitâ€" tees appointed to dealâ€"with Berlin‘s future water supply, the appointmcent of a meat inspector, Canada‘s fire losses, and the employment of exâ€" ®ervice men after the War. These re ports . were adopted ‘and resolutions recommending suggested action were , Important . features .of the evening were the items of new business inâ€" troduced ‘ at the conclusion of the routine business, _ Manager J. C. Anderson,© of the Bank of Montreal, intimated that the bank managers of the city had practically agreed to reâ€" commend the establishment . of _ a clearing house in this city. ‘County Road Superintendent M. D. Hallman delivered a timely address urging the Boardâ€" of "nde to take a keen interâ€" est in. the proposed new Highway ‘Act when it comes into force and asâ€" fd:t in the promotion of good roads throughout the county. The â€" Board also appointed a strong committee to take steps to organize two companâ€" ies of business ~men for the ~108th Regiment. The discussions were unâ€" usually interesting and snappy and the meeting was pronounced one of the best held in some years.. As Road . Superintendént for . the County for the . past three seasons he had been, doing some studying and figuring on the best <way of bringing the roads to a betterstandard. The chief dificulty had been im securing enough money to build a type of road that will withstand the present day traffic. . It often comes to this, "As a result, we find toâ€"day in the vicinity of Berlin some rather indifâ€" ferent ‘and poor rgads. As the imâ€" provements have peen postponed from year to year, with expectations . of larger grants from the government‘s both Provincial ard Dominion. Howâ€" ever this is now in prospect «of forthâ€" coming and we trust that next seaâ€" son will see inaugurated a policy of building some real permanent ‘roads in the immediate . .vicinity of Betlin, for the more heavily ttavelled roads. "(We have in mind two particulatâ€" ly bad stretches of road, one from the city limits of. Berlin to â€" Bridgeâ€" port, the other from the city limits on Kingâ€"St. East.to the Intersection of the Doon Road, which we expect will be built in 1916, and we . bave been _ figuring on concrete as being best suited for these roads, as there is practically no upkeep charges : for many years on this type of road. ~.*‘(Another difficult problem in this County is to" adopt the system . to building a continuous stretch of good as there are so many separate municipalities so far as road puilding is concerned ; â€" take for illustration the\road leading from Elmira . to Galt. This road takes us through ‘aterloo, Berlin, iPreston and Galt, all having its road work separate. *Now as a chain is no stronger thar its weakest link,so it is with a road for hauling loads and traffic in gener« al, it is not much better than its worst section. No load can be largâ€" er than can be hauled through the worst piece of road. * So it seems to me there should pe some form _ of coâ€"operation between the different municipalities if «e want to establish a system of good roads. ‘This undoubtedly was in the mind of the Commissioners who recommended the adoption of the present legislaâ€" tion. To give another illustration applyâ€" ing to Berlin, take the road leading south from the city past the Berlin waterworks. This road is one of the leading market . roads leading . into Berlin and the condition of this road from _ the G.T.R. on Mill St. and along Shoemaker Ave., has been anyâ€" ‘thin; but a credit to us as citizens of Berlin.‘" Farms !| Farms ! ers waiting, _ Also a _ few choice residences in exchange for farms.
