SAD DROWNING AGGIOENT N WATERLOD DAM Harvey Ellensen, 11 Years Old, Struck Bottom While Diving Yesterday. A sad _ drowning occurred in . the Waterloo dam _ Wednesday _ when Harvey Allensen, 11 year old con of Allensen, the elevenâ€"yearâ€"old. son _ of Mr. and Mrs. George Allensen, Charâ€" les street, met his death by striking his head on the rocky bottom of the lakb. ‘The lad had been at the Centr» Sehool, which he attended, until foutr o‘elock and had gone to the lake with twenty or thirty of his companions most of whom _ were in the water when the accident happened. It appears that the boy had dived and struck his head, | breaking _ his jaw pone and badly pruising his head. The shock stunned him and he _ reâ€" mained under #Water for several minâ€" utes unnoticed by his companions unâ€" til one of them stepped on him while under water and left the water cryâ€" ing *"Someone‘s Drowned." Dr. Webb was called and with many willing volunteers, _ worked on . the body, which the _ boys had brought up, for half an hout using the . pulâ€" motor but the efforts were ineliecâ€" |tive. The boy was a bright little fellow well liked by all who knew him and his untimely death comes as a great blow to his parents and friends. He had just passed his eleventh birthday this July. About ten autoâ€" mobile loads from Berlin, including Col. Martin, of the Tist, Col H. J. Bowman of the 108th, and a number of the officers of the Regiment, soldiers of the 71st, and a number of friends. The officers of the j1st ROENDCNE AUZ on a recruiting campaign for the purâ€" pose of securing the necessary men as quickly as possible in order to comâ€" mence battalion drill at London with the full complement of men, Col. Sutherland, who ‘has served with the _ 1st contingerft and was wounded, and is the commanding offiâ€" cer of the 7ist Battalion, is delivering addresses throughout the district asâ€" signed to the Tist. He attracts large crowds owing to his exceptional abilâ€" ity as a speaker and the businessâ€"like manner in which he presents _ the isltuatlon ‘to the young men in his apâ€" peal for recruits. The meeting was held on the vilâ€" lage square and was largely attended. Dr. Wilson, of Plattsville, . was the chairman, and briefly explained the obâ€" ject of the meeting, which was to enâ€" courage recruiting in Blenheim townâ€" ship. Oxford County was expected to ’proflde oneâ€"company, 230 men, of which 110 had been enlisted. Brief addresses were delivered by two Blenheim officers, Lieut. Kaufman and Lieut. Wilson, who were well reâ€" ceived. Eloquent and loyal addresses were given by exâ€"Major Pattullo and Donald Sutheriand, M. P., both ‘of which were received with enthusiasm. ‘The speeches of the afternoon, howâ€" ever, were delivered by Col. H. Martin of Berlin, and Major Sutherland. ‘The former emphasized the seriousness of the situation and the need~for men, while the latter gave a _ graphic . deâ€" scription of trench warfare. At the close of the meeting several young men stepped forward and enlisted. ‘The Woodstock regimental band, all of the members of which have enlistâ€" ed for active service, under the direcâ€" tion of Bandmaster McEwen, provided the music during the afternoon _ and were tendered a _ hearty vote _ of thanks.
