McKechnie‘â€" da To the Right Honorable Sir Wilitid of Laurier, Premier vof â€" Canada. me Sir.â€"On behalf of the faculty and U" student body of St. Jerome‘s College no we beg your patience that we may ;“' briefly _ express _ our sincere gratiâ€" 1;1‘ tude â€" for the exalted â€" honor that be you, sir, this ‘day bring to . cur _, college. It is always an honor WOTâ€" ,, thy of. chronicle when the premier of o1 our â€" great Canada visits an instituâ€" j, tion, but superlatively so, when that'tc premier is universally recognized as | the first man in statéesmanship, & ;( great exponent of moral inbegrityJ S a profound Scholar, a true fosterer oL' learning and a staunch advocate of} ; all that is noble and uplifting. _ It is in this light, Sir,*that we wiewl four guest and we are quite sensiâ€"; j | tive to the sublime honorâ€"a privilege‘ | which will never be efaced from our ‘| memories and will be recorded in the: annals of St. ‘Jerome‘s as a "proud L day" in its history. 1 we believe, Sit, that moral educaâ€" , | tion is essential to good citizenship. ; Man is a complex boing composed of body and soul. The body for its acâ€" 4 tion depends on the soul, the life giving principle; and the soul as Iong Clas it is in union with the body, conâ€" ~ Inot act â€" without the body through which it communicates with the outâ€" ~ side world. The soul depends on tlie * body ~for sense impressions from ~ which it abstracts ideas or mental ~ perceptions. The body in turn . is ‘ made to act by the: soul, it obeys ‘; ‘the dictates of the spiritual faculty. ‘The soul is endowed with intellect and will which although inherent in y the _ soul and bearing certain interâ€" *\ relations are distinct in their operâ€" ations. The intellect is the faculty to | that knows; the will the faculty that â€"| decides upon action and to it the ;. | bodily members are subject. Hence, ge | to bring out what is best in man we ho‘ must develop these.facultfes; wo must‘ at | store the intellect with true knowâ€" re. | ledgo; we must exercise the will to ut | act along lines illuminated by the he | truths in the intellect and to direct he| the actions of the man according to ies | the best judgment of the intellect. We know, further, that the will deâ€" pends on the light of the intellect. Hence, â€" only truth or knowledge taken in its proper sense is conduâ€" cive to right action and God is the beginning and end ol all truth and consequently _ cannot be eliminated from true education. These are prinâ€" ciples, Sir, that we well know that you admit,. principles that ~you reâ€" eagnize to be the basis of lasting soâ€" clety, principles that alone can work out that solidity of the state, prinâ€" ciples that make good citizens upon whom it is that the future and perâ€" manent greatness of Canada _ must depend, E â€" The world is quite eognizant that you, Sir, are a fearless champion of righteousness, thak_yout prh:? life is consistent with your faith and that your service to the State will print the name ofâ€" Sit Wiltrid Lauriet in boid characters in the history _ of ever stand forth as an ideal for the emulation of future generations.
