Mr.â€"Clement ansounced that the candidates had arranged between themgelves that each be allowed 45 minutes \to address the electors, and that the first speaker, Dr. Lackner, be given five minutes for reply. Dr. Lackner. Dr. Lackner said he â€"esâ€" feemed it an honor to represent the North Riding of â€"â€" Waterloo. The question cn this occasion was not who should represent the riding, but whether the Whitney Government had fulfilled the promises made previous . to assuming power in 1905. . He did not _ think there was a shadow â€" of doubt but that the Whitney Governâ€" ment would be returned next. Monâ€" day. . Mr. Whitney promised â€" that when the Conservatives gained power the electors would have a sectet balâ€" lot and next Monday the toters o. Ontario would receive for the fitst time a secret }nllo&. The railway tax had been in creased from 30 to 60 per cent by the Whitney Government, a large proportion of which goes back . o the municipalities. In 1906 Berlin teâ€" ceived $873.94 and in 1907 the sum was increased to $1104,17. The grants to schools by $600,000 during the: last three and a half yeatrsâ€" and last session the sum of $80,000 was lvo\ed toward the * support of the echools in towns and cities . Speakâ€" ing â€" of the reduction im . school books, Dr. Lackner quoted the preâ€" sent prices compared with the former prices and claimed that 66 cents was saved to the parents in buying a set of readers. â€" He was confident that when the new readers. were issued they would be sold at the same gite as the readerts ate boing sold at Preâ€" gent.
