Signed on behalf of the active memâ€" bers, s Mr. Philp was visibly affected by this token of the regard and kindly feclings of the band boys, and in a few suitable words warmly expressed his thanks. WM. HOGG‘S RINK WINS A most happy event took place at the residence of Mr. W. Philp, bandâ€" master of the Waterloo M. S. Hand, after the band concert Thursday evâ€" ening, when the band boys serenaded Mr. Philp and after being cordially invited in, presented him with â€" an elegant and beautiful leather finished arm chair as a mark of their esteem and appreciation of the services tenâ€" 'dered by him during the past two years or more. The following adâ€" dress was read by Mr. Harry Kress: Dear Mr. Philp,â€"The active memâ€" bers of the Waterloo Musical Socieâ€" ty‘s Band have for some time desired to show their kindly feelings toward you personally, as well as to bear willing testimony not only to _ your high musical abilities, but also io ’your excellent judgment â€"as a band leader in both of which you have dis. ‘tinguished yourself _ since taking icha.rge of the band some two years ago. We are all aware that it is no easy task at the present time in face of aggressive, nay keen and energetic competition from rival band organizaâ€" tions, many of whom aim at the topmost rung in the musical ladder, to deserve, as the band "admittedly~ deserves, to be classed as one of she best, if not the best amateur pand in Ontario. The suecess the band has achieved is doubtless due to the harâ€" mony of sentiment as well as unity of action which have always existed among the members and which hnave been nurtured and promoted by the good business judgment and high perâ€" sonal qualities you have on all ocl casions displayed as a successful and talented band leader.
