Discussed at a Public Meeting.â€"Capi _ ~talsts Pleased with Berlin and ‘ Surrounding Country. © Berlin was favored on Monday evenâ€" Ing and this morning with & visit by m company of Canadian capitalists and ‘American experts who were on an inâ€" @pection tour throughout the district with a view to locatinga sugar refinery. ‘The company was composed of Messrs. Bngh Blain, chairman, John Flett, S. H. Janes, M. McLachlav, N. B. Gage, all of Toronto, Wm. Bauer, of the Oxâ€" mard Construction Co., New York, and wic. Ponoyar, a capitalist of Bay City, Mich. These gentlemen were aceompanied by Prof. W. C. Sbuttleâ€" worth, of the 0. A. C. and Mr. Wenâ€" dell Shantz, in their trip through Smfloo county. Whatever the views these gentlemen were concerning Berlin and the vicinity as a sugar reâ€" finery location, this fact was elicited from most of them, that there is no more beautiful and prosperous farming district in Ontario, than that through which they drove on Monday. The capitalists â€" visited Guelph on1 Monday morning, where they were eordially received by a deputation from the Council and the Roard of Trade, who laid before the visitors the advantages and privileges which the Royal Ci? was prevared to offer themn. They took a trip of inspection around the city and then proceeded direct to Elmira. They stopped at several farms and inspected the soil and the beets which were planted thorein. From Elmira they were driven to Berlin, arriving hure at six o‘clock in the evening. They drove down to Shantz‘s. will property and inspec‘ed that spot, but from all appearances were not favorably impressed with it. _‘ Mayor Bowlby then introduced Mr. ‘ Hugh Blain, of the _ deputation, . Wwhostated that they were on a tour of 6 pection in order to locate a sugar. \ wefinery. They required first of all ) muitable soil and willing farmers to ;'*9‘{5 the required acroage of beets. â€" ‘The speaker said that they had been i meost favorably impressed with what ‘%hey bad seen during the day‘s trip, . @ Berlin undoubtedly had these .| requisite to offer. Other advantages m required, however, in good water The meeting in the Council Chamâ€" ber was delayed considerably, owing to the absence of many of Berlin‘s public _ spirited _ gentlemen, . who evidently were sorely disappointed at the result of the railway byâ€"law, and thought it useless to talk sugar beet refinery without having railway comâ€" petition to offer. There was quite a delegation of farmers present, however, and after consultation a deputation enmposed of Mayor Bowlby, C. K. Bugar Refinery Matieis, W supply, good transportat WATCHMAKERS and OPTICIANS Opposite Bank of Hamilton BERLIN. JANSEN BROS., a:utwnd evider bond. Janes stated be was not altogether posted upon the requireâ€" ments of a eugarâ€" beet factory,. â€" < They required 5000 acres of beets yearly and the growing must be in rotation, as tbeets sbould not be planted in the same plot lees than four years abart. From bis? view Berlin offers splendid facilities in the way of soil and farmers. Farmers in Michigan and other States pet $25 to $30 an acre. He wished to correct the statement that the visitors were stuck on Berlin, as they were not. They were on a tour of inspection, and 2s be was an Ozford County he was confident that Oxford could offer better facilities. He referred to the lack of railway competition which is to be regretted. Regarding water supply he bad his doubts in Berlin‘s ability to furnish the required amount. _ Be stated that when the company decided upon a point for location they would look for a bonus and free site and perâ€" haps other thipgs.
